Do cops really put warrants out against license plates?

Or is it just a BS reason they give you to pull you over and see if you're doing something you shouldn't be doing? It's happened to me twice now in the past few months. I screwed up this last time, and gave the cop an out (and he was cool about it, no cop attitude bullshit for a change). He came to my window, told me there was a warrant out aginst my plates, and I stopped him there, asking "Is the name ..........". He said yes, and I explained to him what happened to me last time. He looked at my ID, didn't even run it, apologized, and that was that.

SO, should I call the DMV and ask WTF is going on with my plate number and why it hasn't been changed from the previous driver, or is this all just cop BS?

I seem to remember another thread about this. It's absolute bullshit, they put warrants out against people, not cars.

Yeah, that was my thread, too. That was more of a "cops are assholes" kind of a thing. But now that this has happened twice, I wonder if there isn't something to it. I should have made the cop tell me the name of the person who the warrant was against, instead of giving him the out. That he didn't run my ID was telling as well.

It would seem more likely that he ran your plates and received info that there was a warrant for the owner of the vehicle.

And it happened in two different KC suburbs, just to be clear.

I'm the owner of the vehicle, and have been for two years. I have no warrants.

What about this?

I'm with some friends. A cop follows us in town for probably 2-3 miles and then pulls us over (how long can they actually follow someone?) He then asks if he can search the persons car (she said no) He does it anyways...(is that legal). There was no reason for him to think we had anything illegal (he said he was checking for "guns, knives and bombs")

Problem 2. I get pulled over this past thursday for a busted tail light lense which is covered up with red tape. He takes my license, checks it, brings it back and says thanks bye. Is it illegal even if it's covered with red tape?

#1 No way he should of been allowed to search your car. What he could of done then is call for a dog and when the dog came and signaled a hit the cop would of then had probable cause to search.
#2 I don't believe it's legal to cover a tail lens with red tape. The guy probably could have given you a fix it ticket but didn't feel like it. Consider yourself lucky and get it fixed before you get pulled over again. You will.

I'm pretty damn skeptical about it, if there was a warrant out against you they'd find out when they ran your license. It must be an excuse they train cops to use in your area.

As far as I know, a cop can't legally search your vehicle unless he either has:

A. Probable cause to believe there's something illegal in it or it's being used for illegal activity

B. the vehicle operator's permission

As far as the taillight, laws may vary but most states all that's required is one red taillight, and one covered with red tape should qualify as that. More than likely he was just looking for an excuse to pull you over.
