Specifics of Dorsey's contract

I've seen rumors/estimates of five years ranging between $50-53 million, including $21-23 million guaranteed.

However, kcchiefs.com contradicts that to some extent:-

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Saturday that the club has agreed to terms of a six-year contract with DT Glenn Dorsey. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.
http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2008/07..._glenn_dorsey/

I don't know if the length is amazingly significant, but I think I'd prefer he get a six-year deal, to be honest. Although if he performs as I expect him to he'll be due for an extension/raise in 2011/12 when the cap is $150 million, or even non-existant.

Anyone else seen anything definitive?

Does anyone ever reach Years 4 or 5 of a contract, much less 6? The whole contract process is odd to me, because it seems like the last few years exist only to spread out the signing bonus hit and to give the player an ego boost.

It's a 6-year contract with a voidable sixth year.

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- First-round draft pick Glenn Dorsey has agreed to contract terms with the Kansas City Chiefs and was expected at Saturday afternoon's practice, The Associated Press has learned.

Dorsey, the fifth overall choice in the 2008 draft, agreed to a five-year deal with an option for a sixth year, Chiefs president Carl Peterson said on Saturday.

A person who requested anonymity because terms of the deal had not been announced said it included a guarantee of about $22 million.

Peterson said the deal was hastened by the signing the day before of Vernon Gholston, who was drafted right behind Dorsey by the New York Jets.

The Chiefs have agreed to terms with 11 of their 12 draft picks. Still unsigned is tight end Michael Merritt, a seventh-round selection out of Central Florida.

The Skinny on Dorsey’s Deal
July 26, 2008 - Bob Gretz |

From River Falls, Wisconsin

Glenn Dorsey arrived on campus right around noon, signed his new contract, took a physical and he’ll be on the field this afternoon for the Chiefs afternoon practice.

The deal is being reported as six years for $51 million.

We can give you numbers closer to reality.

In essence, it’s a five-year deal for $33 million. Dorsey signed a six-year contract, but the final year is voidable if Dorsey plays 45 percent of the defensive snaps in any of the first five seasons. Baring injury, he’ll void that final year by mid-season this year.

The guaranteed money is $22.5 million.

To get another $18 million under this deal, Dorsey would have to make the Pro Bowl four times in five years and the Chiefs would have to win the Super Bowl twice. If Dorsey makes four trips to Hawaii and the Chiefs win a pair of Super Bowls, they will be happy to pay him that extra $18 million.

Whether he ends up getting $33 million or $51 million, Dorsey’s deal is the biggest in Chiefs history.

So is the 6th year a player option or club option?

edit: Mr. Arrowhead's post answered this one.

Hell, if that happens, I'll throw in a few hundred myself.

That is a DEEP contract for somebody injury prone. I have no doubt he will be a great player if he doesn't break down though.

Unfortunately, the last DT we drafted in the top 10 reached year 5 of his contract.
