Do you have a land line phone?

We have a land line phone and my wife and I each have a cell phone. The land line phone costs about $35 a month. The service itself is fairly cheap but all the various taxes and fees add up. We rarely use it - in fact, I don't remember the last time we used it to make a call. And if it rings it's almost always a political survey of some sort, our friends and family call the cells. I have used it in the past for calling 800 numbers, tech support type stuff, to avoid burning cell minutes, but I don't see that being worth $35 a month.

My wife's argument for keeping the land line is that we need it in case of emergency because a 911 operator gets an instant read on where you're calling from. Apparently that's not always the case with a cell? And I have to admit, I'd hate for something bad to happen because I wanted to save $400 a year.

Just wondering whether or not you guys still have them, and why or why not.

The wife and I just have cell phones. I have not had a land line for about 6 years. Everyone call us on our cell phones and we have no need for one. Never heard of the 911 thing. I would be interested where your wife heard that.

I have a land line phone so that I can hook it up to my DVR for DirectTV.

I go through AT&T and the basic plan is $16.00 a month and because I have it, I get a discount on my internet. If you don't want it to ring all night then don't hook it up to an actual phone.

Nope. Wife and I both have cell phones. I dialed 911 twice from a cell phone and as long as YOU know where you are it isn't a problem. The first thing they do is make sure you are talking to the person that can help.Posted via Mobile Device

RJ.... if the 911 thing is all that's holding you back, just cancel your service and keep the phone where it is. Phone companies are required to provide 911 service on the phone no matter if you're paying or not. 911 will still work if you call and cancel your phone. That way you'll have the 911 security and not have to pay for the line you're not using.

I just keep the land line for my fax machine. Otherwise I wouldn't need it.

Nope. My wife and I have plenty of minutes, and needing 911 is not justification to spend the money every month. We've had that exact conversation. If you need 911 to know where you are immediately, chances are, they'll be too late to help you. JMO.

And that's the other reason. We have a land line plugged in but no service.

I got rid of my land line when I picked up broadband a long time ago. I have my cell phone and that's more than enough for me, I hate phones.

As for your questions about 911 locating, you are paying on that every month, we all do. I remember hearing a story about a boating accident in NY but the 911 responder couldn't find their location. Come to find out the city of NY was charging cell phone customers for the added 911 service but didn't have it implemented in the city. There was a huge fine and the FCC has been keeping a closer look on the 911 service.

Nope, when my wife and I first got the house, I got the cheapest thing you could get through AT&T ($15/month) and NO ONE used it, and all we got on it were telemarketers so I canceled it after one month and we've just used our cell phones since then w/o a problem.

VARSITY
Cell phone services have not gotten down to the range I consider affordable and I hear too many stories of dropped calls and hard to follow conversations because of signal distortion.

I stay on land line for reliability and the fact I use DSL.
