Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 8/25
Aug 25, 2008, 6:47:10 PM

Highlights

HERM EDWARDS: “We made two roster moves today. You know one of them: Jay Feely the kicker and the other is Michael Merritt. Hoyt we let go and Trevor Johnson we let go. We’ve got to do some more things tomorrow by 3 o’clock and we’ll make those decisions then.”

Q: There are still three kickers here including Feely. You’re not going to keep three all week are you?

EDWARDS: “No, we’d like to take two guys into the next game.”

Q: So Feely’s competing?

EDWARDS: “We signed him and we’ve got to make a decision which two guys we keep between now and game time.”

Q: Did you feel after Nick Novak missed (a field goal vs. Miami) that you needed a veteran? He kicked very well last year.

EDWARDS: “He’s been a good kicker in the league. You exhaust all your avenues and this was one that became available and so we decided to bring him in here.”

Q: And you don’t want to go through what you did last year?

EDWARDS: “Just because you get a veteran kicker doesn’t mean you won’t struggle. We’d like to have a kicker opening day who’s our kicker. You’re exactly right. We don’t want to conduct a kicking contest every other week.”

Q: Where this team is right now did you need a guy who’s done it before in this league?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know that so much. We need a guy who’s consistent and you talk about inside the 30-yard line. You get to the 30-yard line that’s about a 43-yard field goal. Some guys are comfortable from there and some guys you need to get a little closer to the 28 or 27. That’s ok, but you’ve got to have a consistent kicker especially when you are putting in a new offense and all points are important.”

Q: So you’re saying he can hit those 40-yarders?

EDWARDS: “Last year I think he missed two and one was blocked. He was pretty consistent for the most part. I think his longest was 53 (yards). He got a 54 (yard) one blocked. He’s been a pretty good kicker and he was up in New York when I was there with the Jets. We’ll see.”

Q: Is he healthy, ready to go?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, he’s ready to go. He’s fine”

Q: He’ll kick against the Rams then?

EDWARDS: ‘Well, we’ll see. We haven’t made a decision who those two guys will be. We’re going to do it again tomorrow and we’ll see if he’s one of them.”

Q: Assuming that he’s one of the two, he will kick for you on Thursday then?

EDWARDS: “We would hope whoever those two guys are we will be in position to kick some field goals. But then again, we’d like to score some touchdowns too. I’m not going to give up the ability to score touchdowns to kick field goals.”

Q: Do the results of Saturday night change your approach to this final pre-season game?

EDWARDS: “We’ll play some starters a little longer. I think if the third quarter speaks about what we did at halftime in adjusting some things the shame of it is we didn’t score. We got all the way down there to the one (yard line). If we had scored it would probably be a moot point. Our starters need to play some and they will.

“I felt good about them driving the ball all the way down in the third quarter. We talked about it at halftime. Defensively, I thought for the most part they had the one drive and they had great field position on the second touchdown from the 24. Then they ran a punt back (for a TD). So, when you think about it defensively they had only one nice drive against the first group and into the third quarter.

“You can look at it a lot of ways. We didn’t play well in certain occasions in that game. There are some things you take out of it positive too.”

Q: You sounded disappointed after the game Saturday night. Last year 0-4 in the preseason and led to a 4-12 regular season. Is it pretty important for the first team guys to play well?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, and last year it wasn’t that way. I thought going into last week we played pretty well. Now, our second game we didn’t score a lot of points but we moved the ball offensively. But defensively we have played pretty consistent for the most part when you think about the last three games.

“The thing about pre-season is you want to get better; you want your players to get better. It’s an evaluation process. I think we’re much better than we were last year at this point in time. Now, we’ve only won one game but I think our team is a lot better. There’s hope to continue to get better. To me, that’s the difference and a big difference.”

Q: Besides the kicker how many roster spots are still in competition?

EDWARDS: “It’s tough because you don’t know who the practice squad players are going to be. Who are going to be those eight? And are you going to take 25 on offense and 25 on defense? What numbers are you going to take? Are you going to take 26 or 24? That’s the kind of juggling act you go through. And, it has a lot to do with when guys get injured. If good guys get injured you can’t cut them. You’ve got to put them on the 53 and now all of a sudden your squad’s a little short. But there are some roster spots to be had.”

Q: Is Donnie Edwards going to play on Thursday?

EDWARDS: “We’ll see. Right now he’s feeling pretty good.”

Q: Charles?

EDWARDS: “We anticipate playing.”

Q: Cottam?

EDWARDS: “Anticipate. We’ll see where he’s at. He’s getting better.

“That’s a key when you look at our team: there are four rookies that we drafted that didn’t play. Cottam is one of them, Charles is one of them, Will Franklin is the other one, and our left tackle, Brandon Albert. Those guys can help us and there’s a reason we drafted them. They have to play for us. They’re not backup guys; they are guys who are going to participate in the games a lot.”

Q: Napoleon Harris?

EDWARDS: “I anticipate he will play but I’ll see where he’s at. He practiced.”

Q: Brandon Albert did individuals for the first time today. Do you expect him to do any team stuff this week?

EDWARDS: “This is it for us. It’s walk-throughs the next few days. You can’t ask the guys to practice coming off a Saturday night game and getting home at 3 o’clock in the morning. This was good enough today.”

Q: Do you expect him to participate?

EDWARDS: “We’ll see next week as we get going.”

Q: What about Alfonso Boone?

EDWARDS: “He’s got a little nick on this thigh. He probably won’t play this week but next week he should go.”

Q: What about DeMorrio?

EDWARDS: “He’s got the finger (injury) but he won’t play this week. He’ll be ready for the opener.”

Q: What’s the matter with Maurice Price, your receiver?

EDWARDS: “He’s got a little bit of a groin injury and a shoulder that’s sore. We might hold him out too.”

Q: You’re getting a little thin at wide receiver, so might you do something there?

EDWARDS: “He’ll get better. This is one of those deals where it’s a short week. If it was a long week he would probably go. Franklin I don’t know how many weeks.”

Q: Give a report on Brodie where he is this year as opposed to last year at this point.

EDWARDS: “Confidence-wise. He’s more confident. He takes care of the ball better. He had the fumble and interception in the two-minute (vs. Miami) but other than that he’s doing what he’s asked to do. I think he feels comfortable in the offense.”

Q: Do you feel comfortable with him being your opening day starter at quarterback?

EDWARDS: “Absolutely. He’s our guy.”

Q: This is probably not a fair way to compare, but you have kickers out here competing and you brought in a veteran guy. Does Brodie give you the best chance of winning?

EDWARDS: “Right now, absolutely. No doubt in my mind. That’s the way we’re going. That’s our guy. That’s what we said we’re going to do. We’re not going to change our mind after three pre-season games. We said this is what we’re going to do and now it’s going to happen. We’re not going to blink. We have a conviction on how we’re going to form this team and what kind of team we’re going to build. We’re playing a lot of young guys and there will probably be some games in the season that are similar to the ones that we just played. But that’s part of it. You know that. These kids want to win; they’re very hungry to be coached; they’ve got great attitude.”

Q: You can’t play all young guys and you have to bring in a veteran kicker for a little stability but the quarterback position is a different position?

EDWARDS: “For us right now we have a veteran quarterback in Damon Huard. We have two young guys we’re trying to bring along. That’s where it’s at for us. If you bring another veteran in you have to let someone else go. Who do you let go?”

We need to talk about Herm's configuration of space and time.

This may have bewen discussed before, but I missed it if it was. I have the Dish DVR, and am able to rewind a re-watch plays. If this had been a regular season game, I suspect we would have seen the red flag thrown out on the 3rd down play. It was very, very close, but I really think the nose of the ball broke the plane of the goal line on LJ's first dive over the top.

In the big picture I'm not sure playing the starters longer is a good idea in the 4th preseason game.

Yep. I watched that a number of times. While LJ was diving, the ball went past the plane. As LJ went to the ground, the ball actually was pulled back almost a foot.

He is doing what we ask him to do....there lies the problem. Let's ask him to do something else.
