Yep. Huge political blunder. Should have selected Mitt Romney. Hell, the republicans should have nominated Mitt Romney. If they did, I would actually go vote.

He couldn't select Romney.

The Mormon background would have killed any chance of McCain being elected.

ANY.

Not to mention people would flip out at how Romney changed all his stances to play to the base, and then he's a wealthy guy who made even more money as a CEO of a company as the economic mess happens.

Something tells me in this environment Romney would be despised.

What difference does it make? It's not like McCain has any chance of getting elected now. I don't really look at religion, I care that Romney has a savvy business background and understands economics. That should be the main focus in this election IMO.

I don't care about religion, you don't look at religion you know who does?

Pretty much the entire base of the Republican party since they decided the religious right was their base.

You're really out of touch.

Dude, take a few months off and travel.

What's important or non-important to you is life or death to many Americans.

Wake up.

Why should religion be a main issue of an election in a country founded on the freedom of religion?

That's a great question but that's just how it is. Religion in some ways has way to much pull over peoples everyday lives.

I travel all over the country for 2 months or so for my job actually. I've been to the South many times, and that seems like the only place where the people really base their vote on religion. I mean, there are evangelicals everywhere, but in most other areas of the country it doesn't seem like religion is the primary focus.

Without the overly religious vote a Republican can't win, they've tethered themselves to that group.

That's true, no doubt about it. I really don't understand why poor broke ass southern white people want to vote republican. Usually when you meet these people they are the nicest people you will ever meet, and would give you a helping hand whenever you needed. They are usually religious too, and the bible preaches on helping people, yet republican ideology is for less government.

And then the rich movie star elitist acting crowd who act like they care about nobody but themselves tend to vote Obama. I think it's more of a cultural thing sometimes than anything.

It reminds me of the part in American Psycho where he preaches for all this good, yet kills people and makes fun of homeless people.

Patrick Bateman: Well, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

Yet at the same time these are generally the elitist people who are hypocrites in regards to what they say and what they do.

Perception...notice how they constantly paint Democrats as anti American and elitist? It plays in those areas....

The Republicans have been running on the culture war for years they've got it down pat, guns, gays, god, abortion.

They need to abolish the republican party and make a more progressive party, but then that would alienate those religious nut jobs that the republicans need for votes. I think most republicans don't want to be any where near 20% of the crazy republican base, but at the same time they acknowledge they have to have those votes.

I'm pretty much 60% republican, and 40% democrat. So I hate liberals a little bit more than republicans. Against strong military, abortion, god, but yet I don't care if people have guns, I am against almost all "giveaway" welfare, socializing health care, and heavy taxation.

It's the largest voter block in America. It only makes sense for a political party to cater to it. This is why philosophical parties are better than political parties. Philosophical "parties" don't have to cater to a voter base in order to gain power - they just have to win the most minds.
