Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s message smacks a homer at Bowman Field
Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s message, appearance smacks a homer at Bowman Field
By MARK MARONEY mmaroney@sungazette.com Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's straight talk Thursday night at Bowman Field spoke volumes for Dale McKay, 60, of northern Tioga County. McKay turned 20 years of age during an ambush in Vietnam. He served with the 1st Infantry Division of the Army in 1968 during the Tet Offensive in Saigon. "It was great," McCay said of the speech by John McCain's Republican running mate. "It was spectacular. Well worth the drive down," said the registered Democrat who plans to vote for the GOP this time around. For Leon Ward, a house painter who lives next to Bowman Field, the difference in parties has to do with principles. "I like what John McCain and Sarah Palin stand for," he said as he waited for the gates to the ballpark to open. The line of people pressing to get in snaked around the perimeter of the stadium parking lot. White Snake, a rock band with a hit "Here I Go Again," blared over the loud speakers. Gail Robertson, an artist from Lewisburg, said the media attacks against Palin are sexist and wrong. Recently retired Jan Oden of Lewisburg said she understands Palin. As a hunter who has bagged wild game in Canada and Africa, Oden admitted that McCain was not her first choice for president. However, when McCain picked Palin to be his running mate, there was no question left in her mind. Oden, who is retired from a Florida building company that recently had to lay off employees, was adamant that an administration of Sens. Barack Obama and Joseph Biden would expand the welfare rolls. "We deprive an element of our society with welfare," Oden said. For most of her speech, Palin hammered home lower taxes under the McCain administration and energy independence, something that revved the crowd to a fevered pitch. "Drill baby drill," the Palin fans chanted. "We will drill for oil and natural gas and use clean coal," she replied. "There's more coal in our country than there is oil in all of Saudi Arabia." Instead of such energy sources, she claimed, Obama wants to continue to import hundreds of billions of dollars worth of oil from countries who "don't like America." She said McCain would seek to harness the power of wind, solar, biomass and invest in clean coal technology. Several spectators sported white ball caps with clean coal written on the front. Palin, whose son Trig has Down Syndrome, said she and McCain would fight to help families with children having special needs. "John and I have a vision of America where every innocent life counts," she said, again to thunderous applause. For Leona Klementovich, 81, of Reach Road and her friend Bernice Winder, 79, Palin's focus on family values and her stance against unnecessary abortion were reasons enough to cast their vote for the Republican party. "She is one tough, talented and accomplished governor," said state Rep. Matthew Baker, R-Tioga. Mayor Gabriel J. Campana thanked the Republican National Committee for selecting the city to host the event. Palin said McCain was tried, tested, truthful and is ready to serve as commander-in-chief. "As president and vice president, we will always put country first," she said. "We will help families keep their homes. We will clean up the corruption on Wall Street," she said. "We will balance the budget in the first term." |

Are you going to be able to adhere to Article 88 if Obama is elected?

It is interesting to me that people are saying McCain will not raise taxes. Let's assume that it is true he won't raise taxes. He has proposed lowering taxes on the wealthy, but leaving the middle class with their same tax burden. How does that help middle class? I don't believe trickle down economics can work because those at the top will cut off the flow down the the mountain and keep the $$$ for themselves.

And when you ask him to (God forbid!) verblize his thoughts, rather than rely on a c&p, all he can resort to is name-calling.
