LNBS: What are our realistic expectations for Brett Veach?

This is a stacked roster from top to bottom. The challenge Brett has is keeping the rosters young talent in town while adding to it through the draft.

The guy has a ton of big decisions on the horizon.

Trading Alex Smith at the appropriate time
Getting Mahomes inked before camp
Getting an extension in place with Mitch Morse
Letting DJ and Hali go at the appropriate time
Extending Terrance Mitchell
Extending Steven Nelson
Extending Dee Ford at the appropriate time/price
Making sure Marcus Peters stays in KC for his whole career
Deciding what to do with Allen Bailey, if he has a big year
Giving Bennie Logan an extension, if deserved

It's gonna be interesting to see which direction he goes with all of these.

What do you guys feel are realistic expectations for the next (presumably) 4 years?

Mimes to make sure Peters, Jones, Hill, Morse and Ford stay and that doesn't mean give them a blank check.

Can we pump the brakes a bit on Terrence Mitchell?

For all we know the dude is another Jamell Fleming/Marcus Cooper. Both of those guys made big plays and had big games early in their Chiefs careers. Mitchell may not yet have been given enough rope to hang himself.

And he might.

Mahomes is really more of a staff responsibility at this point.

-Handle the young talent's contracts well as they come up(Dorsey is gone in part due to this, so he needs to do better)

-Continue to draft well

-Continue to find talent outside of the draft

In the end I want him to make me not care that Chris Ballard is in Indy. Part of this will come from help of his staff. Dorsey had Ballard and Veach to help him. Veach may not have that kind of depth to draw on now.

Keep drafting well and get our cap in better shape so we can have opportunities to get better in the off season. Resign Peters and Hill when the time comes.

What are Leigh Steinberg's clients generally like when it comes to signing their rookie contracts? Do any of them have a history of holding out or any of that garbage?

If Veach was as instrumental in finding some of the talent that he did, then I'd prefer it if he turns out to be "hands on" and continues to be very involved in the scouting process...

Everything is second to the draft and free agency. If he stocks the team with talent as well as or better than Dorsey, he'll be a success. If we go backward in those areas, it was a terrible move no matter how much money Dorsey wanted or how casually he dressed around the office.

Well if Dorsey did one thing wrong it was dramatically mismanage the cap. Veach is going to be against the wall for about 12 months, so expect a bunch of tough decisions as he cleans up that mess.

I think Dorsey's mismanagement of the cap, along with his brilliant work to bring in Mahomes, makes trading Smith a necessity this coming offseason to open up the cap.

Probably the biggest challenge for Veach is improving the offensive weaponry, particularly receivers, with no 1st round pick and no cap room. We can't throw Mahomes out there with middling receiving talent.

I disagree. Mitchell was just flat out too good down the stretch to suddenly go to shit. He did it against the best of the best too. He was phenomenal against Brown in the playoff game, and his elite 3 cone translates to the football field.

Wouldn't it be funny if Chiefs traded Alex Smith before the week 8 deadline?

LOL I know it won't happen but would be funny.

Did you really just compare Fleming to Mitchell?

When did Fleming start 6 straight games (and not allow a single touchdown during that span?)

Terrence Mitchell is a reverse David Irving--a talent that got away from other teams

It would rush Mahomes and tank our season...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
