Teicher: Chiefs can’t punch the ball in the end zone

Chiefs can’t punch the ball in the end zone

By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

Damion McIntosh suggested the Chiefs lacked a killer instinct. Tyler Thigpen indicated the Saints were too stout up front. Brian Waters said all teams have the same problem.

They were in agreement, though, that the Chiefs’ inability to gain yardage while rushing near the New Orleans goal line was a major factor in their 30-20 loss Sunday to the Saints at Arrowhead Stadium.

“We’re not going out and imposing our will on these other teams,” said McIntosh, an offensive tackle. “Once we do that, we’ll be able to start winning games. Until then, we’ll have games like this, either close or we’re going to lose it at the end. These are things we have to learn.”

The Chiefs ventured inside the New Orleans 10 four times Sunday, and both of their touchdowns there came on passes from Thigpen to Dwayne Bowe. But when the Chiefs tried to use Larry Johnson as a battering ram, they could not budge the Saints and had to settle for field goals.

“You can’t pass the ball all the time,” Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. “You’ve got to be able to run in short-yardage situations, and we’ve got a big back who can do that. We’ve got to get some push up front.

“We didn’t get any push at all. They pushed us back, and we didn’t get any yards.”

The Chiefs thought they had a 1-yard touchdown run by Johnson, requesting a video review after referees initially ruled Johnson was stopped inches short in the second period.

The replay couldn’t prove conclusively that Johnson crossed the goal line, so the Chiefs were denied and eventually had to kick a field goal.

“I like money in my pocket, and I don’t want to give them any reason to take anything out of it, but from my point of view — and maybe I have a biased point of view — it was obvious we scored a touchdown,” Waters said. “They make mistakes … Clearly that was a big call in the game.

“We did everything we could do. It came down to somebody else’s opinion, and that opinion didn’t go our way.”

Even without that disputed call, the Chiefs were getting nowhere with Johnson inside the Saints’ 10. Five times they gave the ball to Johnson. Two times went for zero yards, and three others went for losses.

“That’s a hard place to run the ball,” Waters said. “You don’t run the ball very well down in that particular area. It’s very tight quarters. Even in their (pass) coverages, their first obligation is to stop the run. It’s a tough area to call plays and a tough area to run.”

Thigpen’s touchdowns to Bowe were from 5 and 6 yards.

“When we get down there that close, we’ve got to be able to put seven points on the board,” Thigpen said. “We can’t settle for three points. Kicking field goals is going to get you beat in the long run.”

That fade to the corner is one of the most overused, ineffective plays in the NFL. Luckily it worked for us yeasterday. I thought a naked bootleg would've been the call in those situations.

Seriously, the bootleg would have been a good call. I was screaming for it on that second series inside the five.

If you cant run the ball inside the 5 yard line, your not going to win many games.

The Chiefs just dont have the horses to do it. LJ used to be nails inside the 5.

I really don't like the way we ran the ball at the goal line, we simply went back to our offense that wasn't able to gain any yards on anyone earlier this year. We bring 10 men into the box, when we have enough trouble blocking 4.

McIntosh shouldn't be allowed to talk, the damn guy is lucky to even be on a football field anywhere the way he has played this year.

No kidding. The 8-year veteran who can't adjust to a position change (even though Albert had seemingly no problem), keeps himself in worse shape than the rookie left tackle, and STILL manages a false start nearly every ****ing game.
