Advice on buying a new computer

I'm looking for a solid, basic unit, good for web surfing and e-mails. Nothing extremely fancy in terms of video card or huge gigs of memory. I know opinions vary on Best Buy, but would it be worth the trip to check out what they have (convienient since I have a BB card), or are there better places to look?

Thanks in advance.

BB actually has some good deals sometimes. What are you looking to spend? What about HD space? And about the ram, you will probably need at least 2-3 GBs due to all new PCs having Vista on them. I am no expert, but that seems to be the current theme.

If you get one from a big box store, don't ever, ever get any of the services that those asshats push on you.

I'm not looking to break the bank. It's a unit for a family member that just wants to browse and e-mail, that's all. I was thinking that most new comps come with 2 gigs ram to start, but maybe I was wrong.

I have 2 Circuit City's near me that are going out of business. Maybe I'll run by there and check it out.

While I don't know much about electronics, I do know this much. And I love it when the person goes all dickbag when you turn down their offer of this and that for the third time. "Well, allright, but it could sure save you money in the long run, if anything goes bad".

That's a 2.8 Gig processor dual core AMD that runs at a really low power consumption, 4 gigs of Ram, a 500 gig HD, a DVD burner, a case with a PSU, DVD Burner, and Windows XP rather than Vista for 400 bucks

Shit, that's a good deal. That blows away that dinosaur computer I'm typing on right now. Maybe I'll get that for ME, and give away my old one, lol.

NewEgg looks like they've got good deals on their LCD's, too. Dammit, Hamas, now I've got some decisions to make (and I could do damage to the bank account on that site, heh).

Go with Newegg... They have great stuff at great prices.

Also their reviews are excellent. The geeks review the hell out of their stuff.

True that. My in laws bought a new laptop from BB a few months ago. They specifically told them they did not want all the crap that Geek Squad puts on for extra fees. When they went up to pick it up, it had all that extra crap and the extra fees. My MIL told them they better get that crap off and they better charge the original price they quoted. They did exactly what she said. Those fuggers tried, but my MIL don't put up with BS.

My current desktop PC and laptop each have 60GBs. I am quickly running out of room. Who would've thunk it?

BTW, the Newegg suggestion is solid. I am also high on Newegg. Both NE and Tiger Direct have served me well.
