laptop is this any good

The daughter, aged 29...errr 17, needs a laptop/computer for school and surfing/social crap etc. Not real big on gaming or large number crunching.

I'm not gonna spend an arm and a leg for the latest and greatest. The wife found this model for $130 factory refurbished. She took one look at it and asked where the bag was? It came shipped in a brown box. Does it have PowerPoint? I guess for school. I said no...you need MS Office???? for that and to buy at Walmart is going to be expensive. She stormed out of the room "I don't want some old piece of crap that I have to load up everything".

Dell Latitude D630,74 Gb HD, Windows XP Professional Version 2002 svc pack 3, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU, T7100 @ 1.88GHz, 1.18 GHz 1.99 Gb RAM, DVD-RW Drive.

So, is this a "old piece of crap"? I thought for the price, it was a decent workable device.

It does have Open Office loaded. Is there PowerPoint with that?

Ahh, I just went digging and found a MS Office xp version 2002 standard for Students and Teachers CD set that I bought a long time ago. Would that serve her purpose? It says includes word/excel/outlook/PowerPoint.

Thoughts?

You do realize that XP will no longer be supported by MSFT after April of this year. Wide open to hackers.

I don't know what your budget is, but Sams and WalMart has been unloading Dell Windows 8 with touchscreen laptops for under 300.

They have the basic Intel processor, but that is still a pretty powerful.

I just checked on Walmart's website and they have a lot of great refurbished laptops for under 300.

I would stay away from HP refurbished products. They have a ton of poor reviews.

Did you already buy it?

Shit, might as well light your money on fire.

I have 3 laptops of equal or better power laying in my closet that are worthless because they are so old and slow no one would pay for them.

I should toss em :/

Why not drop $2000 on a Macbook Air that runs Facebook awesome! I don't see what is unreasonable about this?

In all seriousness, that laptop you quoted is ancient and will most likely give her nothing but headaches. The Dell Venue 8 Pro (tablet) is more powerful and has full Office (except Outlook I believe) preloaded and it costs under $300. Also Lenovo makes something similar to the Dell Venue Pro equivalent but they are Chinese and Dell has awesome awesome tech support. They fixed a laptop I destroyed free even when I didn't have the warranty.

One requirement. It must have a DVD drive.

I'll see if I can return them.

Thanks for the ideas.

Anything that's less powerful than a phone shouldn't be bought~

Hell if you don't need word processing you can get a more powerful android tablet for around 70-80 bucks.

edit: didn't see the dvd drive.

spend 3 or 400 bucks and get an entry level modern laptop, that should last for 3-5 years.

I was going to mention a tablet as well. I bought my son a tablet for xmas, cheap little thing designed for kids, 1.8ghz Android tablet for $99.

I agree though, a laptop that old and that weak simply isn't worth the space on your desk these days.

Also, my apologies if i sound like i was piling on. If that's the laptop you have and if you're kinda stuck with it, there are plenty of free MS Office like programs out there. I prefer Libreoffice. It looks and acts just like the old XP version of Office ( i hate the new version that comes with Vista/7/8). It includes Power Point, Excel, Word etc, everything that Office comes with.

But....it's free.

**Oh hey, heh. I googled the laptop. Kinda ironic that my brother in law had a newer variation of one of those. It was given to him for free a few years ago by his school. I can tell you one positive thing about it....it's sturdy as a mofo. The case is thick and heavy. I believe it's considered a business class laptop so it can take a beating. I KNOW it can take a beating....i've seen it lol. It's a redeeming quality for laptops these days since most feel weak and flimsy.

Outside of it being refurbished and having that AIDs of an OS, for $580 I would jump on this thing.
