09 Olathe Marathon Sat, Mar. 28th --In honor of victims of cancer -- and my first !

Greetings Planeteers!
Next Saturday, March 28th, I will be running in the 2009 Olathe Marathon! This will be my first attempt at running a marathon. I have been running consistently for about a year and have run off and on since my army days (got out in 99). Last October I came across the Olathe marathon and decide to train and do it. I am 31 years old and need to get started on my 'bucket list'. I found an 18 week training program and started it in November. I have trained all winter and followed it to a tee. I suppose I am as ready as I will ever be... 3 pairs of running shoes later I have racked up the following stats:

Total Workouts: 67
Total Distance: 439.62 miles
Total Duration(hh:mm:ss): 61:41:29
Average Pace: 8:25 Min/Mile.

During a long training run about 2 months ago, I decided that I would run this in honor of people who have fought or are fighting cancer (my 30 year old wife was treated with surgery, chemo, and radiation in 2008 and we are still looking for our new normal) There were days during chemo that every step she took was extremely hard and it was hard not to quit, and this race is my attempt to understand how that feels. I have collected money to donate to a local family, as well as having a memorial shirt made to wear during the race. It has the names of friends and family of folks who have fought cancer. (Both sides are full) Anyway thanks for reading, wish me luck, and if you have a name of someone you would like me to add to my memorial list (on the Facebook group I created) let me know. It is amazing and sad how many people have been affected by cancer. My sympathy to all of you who have lost loved ones.

My goal is to finish the 26.2 mile race in under 3hrs and 50 mins. Thanks for reading, and any tips from others who have run marathons would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately it is a 'no earbuds' race. I have been training without one... but I am hoping I will pace with someone who feels like chatting to kill some time.

I have been asked what drugs I am on to decide that running a marathon was a good idea. However, crack is usually the drug that is mentioned.

Why are earbuds not allowed? That's a bummer.

Good luck. I'd like to do a marathon at some point, but I'm afraid that my knees might turn in their two-week notice if I did.

Yeah, the earbuds thing is a safety issue, it is not closed to traffic. I guess they want to keep people aware of their surroundings.

It's the same as you going from 3 miles to 8 miles... Work up to it. Then it is from 8 to 12... then 12-16. etc, etc. Running has helped me in a lot of ways, basically I have stopped drinking, lost 20 lbs, and I remember what it is like to challenge myself. It has been great for me. My motto/mantra when I am running and getting tired is this; "The only step that matters is the next one." Thats what I focus on, and before I know it a mile is gone, then 5, then 15. If you want to try it, jump in and try it. The worst you can do is not finish... to me thats better than never trying.

I'm a big believer in the Jeff Galloway walk breaks plan--essentially, he argues that you should walk something like 1 minute for every mile or so that you run.

I might suggest running 11 minutes and walking 1 minute. Using that system, you would walk for 5 minutes of every hour--and, as you are making forward progress, it's really only likely to cost you 2 or 3 minutes every hour that you are running.

The thinking, however, is that your legs will be much better rested in the second half of the race--and that you will make up that deficit because you would otherwise be much more tired and your running pace would be slowing down considerably.

Just my and Galloway's $.02. Good luck!

I ran a marathon about 5 years ago in Iowa and it was one of the most difficult things I have ever done and I feel like I am very athletic. So good luck, I find music or thinking about my running form keeps my mind off the pain so you might want to try that, also it would be a good idea to put some kind of petroleum jelly down by your groin so that you dont burn your skin from running. I feel kinda gay typing that but trust me it helps a lot.

It's also the reason that it's worthwhile buying one or two decent pairs of running shorts. When I started stretching out my long runs again a year or two ago--I was having this very problem. Turns out it was my cheap Target shorts. As soon as I bought a decent pair of New Balance running shorts (and they don't look like short-shorts), the problem vanished...

Don't wear anything that you haven't tried out on a 15+ miler on race day. That includes the race shirt--even if it's not one of the cheap cotton souvenirs, it might make your nipples bleed.

Thanks for all the good tips guys. I wear under armor compression shorts and long sleeve shirt under whatever else I wear. They are awesome for pulling moisture away from skin and preventing chafing. I don't plan on using the walking method, but there are a lot of believers in it... Week 15 of the plan was tough... Tuesday 6 miles, Wed 10 miles, Thursday 6 miles and 20 on Saturday. I finished the 20 feeling pretty darn good... So I feel like I should be fine after a good week of mostly resting ( 8 miles total). And I have had bleeding nipples during the Jackson co. triathlon last summer... that sucks. Anyone else here running in Olathe next weekend?
