Local yokals get a crack at greatness.
A special day for Chiefs prospects
Thanks to a rule that allows NFL teams to work out players from their metropolitan areas, the Chiefs have invited several draft prospects with local ties for workouts on Friday. The headliner, of course, is Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman of Grandview High School. Freeman, considered a Top 12-20 pick, will be the first Kansas City-area player taken in the first round since Nebraska cornerback Bruce Pickens of Westport High was the third overal pick by Atlanta in 1991. The NFL has invited Freeman to New York where he will be part of the drama in the green room during the telecast of the draft on April 25. But Friday's workout is not for the Josh Freemans of the draft. He won't even work out at this event. This is for some of the prospects who were not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine to show what they can do, players like Kansas linebacker Mike Rivera of Shawnee Mission Northwest and three Missouri players _ wide receiver Tommy Saunders and linebacker Brock Christopher of Kearney and kicker Jeff Wolfert of Blue Valley West. There likely are others I'm not aware of. Also, two players who have been dealing with injury issues are expected to be at the Chiefs facility _ Missouri tight end Chase Coffman of Ray-Pec and Missouri Western guard Roger Allen of Raytown. Coffman, recovering from off-season foot surgery, has not run since hurting the foot on the last offensive play of the Alamo Bowl, so he'll be limited to catching passes, as he did at the recent Missouri pro day. Allen, a real sleeper pick, could not work out at the Combine because of a sports hernia suffered during a college all-star game, but he has since recovered and turned in a tremendous performance at Missouri's pro day. I've talked to several of these players while preparing upcoming draft stories and all were excited about being able to display their skills in front of the Chiefs brass. They'd would love nothing better to be drafted _ or even signed as an undrafted free agent _ by the team they grew up cheering for. Let's hope their dreams come true. http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/764 |

Kstates defensive end Ian Campbell needs to be looked at. He's gone through too many different defenses. He ran a poor 40 i heard. RP made him play linebacker so that screwed up his development. Before the switch he was a great dend.

Does anyone know why Wolfert wasn't invited to the combine? He's a great kicker.

There is more than one person listed in the article, first of all. So, this may not even be about Allen. Additionally, Allen may be happy with being a UDFA with the Chiefs. That isn't to say that he will be, just that he would be happy with it. IF people shouldn't write about things that they are ignorant about, you should stay away from writing anything about reading comprehension. |
