Mexicans travel to Detroit to protest firing, shocked at poverty in Detroit?

Workers travel from Mexico to Detroit in protest

A group of workers traveled from a Mexican border town to Detroit on Wednesday to protest what they describe as their unfair dismissal by a U.S. auto company.

The workers sought unsuccessfully to meet with executives from TRW Automotive and were escorted from the company's grounds by police.

The group claims the company violated Mexican labor laws by firing employees who tried to negotiate better terms.

"TRW does not respect workers' rights," said Ernesto Lizcano, who was fired in March after working for 10 years at a TRW plant in Reynosa, Mexico that made seat belts for U.S. car companies. "These companies take out the resources and leave poverty behind."

A coalition of Michigan-based organizations helped organize the trip and set up a picket line outside TRW's headquarters after the workers were turned away.

The protestors said the company deliberately targeted higher-paid workers with more seniority when they consolidated operations in Reynosa.

They said workers were not offered transportation to the plant - a typical benefit offered in the region - and that working conditions were significantly worse at the plant that TRW chose to keep when it consolidated.

"There is no day care nearby for children and workplace conditions are not safe," said Lizcano, 29, who led the protest.

Workers were fired when they tried to negotiate with management and the company did not provide the severance pay required under Mexican law, Lizcano said.

Nearly 60 percent of the fired workers were women, he added.

"We can't find work anywhere," said Lizcano, who accused the company of blacklisting the workers.

Lizcano added that he was shocked by the poverty he found in Detroit.

"We're seeing the same conditions here that we see in Mexico," Lizcano said

Thank you globalism, thank you corporate controlled government. Rather than bring the living standards up for the average global citizen we'll all have to live like 3rd worlders.

This entire article was full of dark humor. I don't think it was intentional, but it kind of made me shake my head and smirk.

Whenever I think of Detroit, I think of the fact that the studio movie execs behind Robocop were thinking "we need some hellish apocalyptic-styled scenery that looks like criminals have taken over so Robocop can take them down", we could build some elaborate sets, but nah, "**** it, let's just shoot it on location in Detroit, we won't have to do s***."

And that was 20 years ago.

They were probably shocked to find that there were fewer people there spoke intelligible English than in Mexico. Also, there were fewer white people in Detroit than in Mexico.

Those Mehicans need to realize one reason they have to come here for jobs is because their govt's socialism ( worker's rights gone wild) has destroyed jobs in their own country.

Ha. They've had those policies for years and did the same.

What is new, however, was the "free trade" that was implemented there through NAFTA and the WTO.

That's why the article was amusing to me.

They said workers were not offered transportation to the plant - a typical benefit offered in the region

There is no day care nearby for children

How terrible that must be. By the way, how did they get to Detroit if they can't get to their own workplace, and who's watching their kids while they protest?

The day care issue sounds like an opportunity for a couple of the displaced workers to me. Definitely sounds like there is demand in the area.

Detroit has been run by the democrats for freaking ever. Its a good example of how things mature under their leadership.
