Cash for Clunkers: the Toyota Recall fallout. Epic FAIL

We all knew Cash for Clunkers was an epic fail but the Toyota eecall woes point to a new example of why. How many reliable and safer older model cars were trashed for new cars with major safety issues?

Really? There where 690,000 cars sold during the clunkers program. Of the top 10 vehicles sold during cash for clunkers, three of them were Toyotas with safety issues. The Corolla was the number 1 sold vehicle. The Camry was number 3. Both have the unintended acceleration issue. The Prius was the 7th most sold vehicle. It has a pretty serious braking issue.

Seems to me beyond challenging to say Cash for Clunkers was a success or failure based on what turned out to be (given 20/20 hindsight) the poor buying choices of those who took advantage of the program. Especially when the reason the choice was poor was completely unknown to anyone at the time the program was implemented or to the people who participated.

We can argue whether Cash for Clunkers is good policy, but this particular thread is pretty silly, IMHO.

It's easy for me. No govt program is a success. Especially if we have to be told it is.

no chit, cash for clunkers failed because Toyota hid safety issues from the public?

Really? In what way? Sweeping the problem under the rug for 10 years until they were forced to stop production and sales on most of their product line? Putting a MAJOR hit on their reputation. Sounds like they've managed it just spectacularly.

Right, but there's a huge cause>effect gap here in terms of THIS thread and the OP. As in there is none.

Very astute of you to call the most liberal member of our board a conservative nut just one day after calling Harry Reid the same thing. Maybe you should stand on the sidelines for a while until you figure things out.

Exactly, and how many of those buyers bought because of the incentive but would not have if they had waited a few months and heard the news? Tens of thousands???

There are plenty of reasons that cash for clunkers was an abortion, but this isn't one of them.

What are you talking about? She went off the deep end a year ago. I wouldn't call her a Conservative, though. Just a Negative.

Anyone new here would have a very hard time finding anything from her that leans Liberal.
