Ron Paul Deceived. BucEyedPea Believed. (The Fabricated Reagan Quote)

I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but I wanted to create a separate thread where BucEyedPea can feel free to admit that Ron Paul was wrong or argue endlessly with me about it if she's still in denial without hijacking another thread.

In July of 2006, Ron Paul got up in front of the House of Representatives to speak in opposition to a resolution condemning Hezbollah's attack against Israel. In his statement, he quoted Ronald Reagan to bolster his case. I should say he "mis-quoted" Reagan though, because as it turns out the quote was FABRICATED.

Since then, BucEyedPea has repeatedly referenced that quote here on the pages of ChiefsPlanet. At last count, I've seen her reference it no less than 16 times. What's with these appeasement conservatives and their need to pretend that Ronald Reagan would have approved of their misguided, neo-isolationist message?

See my next two posts for the details.

I don't have any resentment toward Ron Paul. I don't agree with his foreign policy ideas, but I like a lot of the other things he's about.

Yes, I've been wrong before. I was wrong about BEP having the integrity to admit her error when she was offered conclusive proof.

Yes, I supported the Iraq invasion on the basis of WMD and the rest of the reasons offered and I still think it was a good choice.

Well then, what?

Why is Ronald Reagan revered?

I don't understand it

here's what I think I know
he started some minor wars we won in a weekend
he started the taxes cuts for the rich and corporations
he was president when russia collapsed under the weight of the arms race

he trained and funded Bin Laden in Afghanistan
and there was the drugs for guns thing with the contras( love the game) and Iran

just what the hell did he do that was sooo good?

He was instrumental in rolling back communism in central America, bringing freedom to eastern Europe, and putting an end to the soviet union. He didn't do it alone by any means, but he wasn't a mere bystander as revisionists like the people you've been listening to would have us believe.

He didn't train or fund bin Laden, he gave aid to the Afghan mujaheddin mainly through the Pakistanis. If bin Laden ended up with any of this aid, it was a minor amount. Most of what bin Laden raised for his arab mujaheddin force came from Saudi Arabia and bin Laden was a minor figure in the Soviet/Afghan conflict anyway. The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright is a very good book that traces the origins of al Qaeda including bin Laden's time fighting against the Soviets.

The Iran/Contra affair didn't have anything to do with drugs. It was about selling weapons to Iranians who were believed to be moderates at the time in return for money and help getting US hostages in the middle east released. The money was turned around and used to help the Contra rebels in Nicaragua against the wishes of Congress.

In addition to cutting tax *rates* for the rich, he also cut them for the poor and (to his discredit, IMO) increased the number of poor people who paid no income tax at all. As a part of this dramatic change in tax policy, he also eliminated an enormous number of tax loopholes that had been used primarily by the rich to seek shelter from the excessive tax levels in place prior to Reagan's changes.

He took over an economy in shambles with high unemployment, high interest rates, low growth and high inflation and he used tax rate cuts to stimulate the economy and usher in 2 decades of nearly uninterrupted economic prosperity.

He rebuilt an atrophied military and returned our national pride after it had taken a beating as a result of first Vietnam and then Jimmy Carter.

No, not hypocritical at all. You're going to have to flesh out your argument a little if you want me to know what you're talking about. But first, you're probably going to have to figure out what you're talking about.

So I posted in this thread one week ago and after reading the recent post on rep comments from BEP to people posting in this thread I checked mine today. It didn't disappoint:

No comment other than the comma. Hilarious anyway.
