Magazine Subscriptions

I'm looking for a couple political/cultural magazines to subscribe to.

Would appreciate any recommendations.

The Week - has a bit of everything. Sums up editorials and influential opinion pieces. Really underlooked.

Reason - Libertarian

The New Yorker - "Liberal", but also features a lot of high-literature writings (poetry, fiction, etc.)

The Nation - "Liberal"

The Economist - Promotes free trade and free markets, but also more "liberal" things like gay marriage, Barack Obama, and government health care

If I was buying one, I'd get The Week. If I was buying two, I'd get The Week and The Economist.

The Economist is a pricey subscription, but is easily the most informative mag about world affairs out there. I've considered renewing my subscription, but I usually don't have the time to get through the whole thing before the next one comes out.

Jenson's list is good. The Atlantic Monthly has some good investigative journalism as well.

For something really far left, there's Z magazine, Mother Jones, or the International Socialist Review.

I read my grandma's copies. There's some good stuff in it, but a lot of it is natural history. I wouldn't say politics is much of a concern.

A better publication if you want to go down that route is BBC Knowledge.

Why do you say that? I think if there's any magazine that says "For Corporate Elite" -- it's The Economist.

Not that I agree, as it's standardly pretty conservative (particularly when compared as a British rag).

But why is it misnamed? Aren't there socialist economists?

There are socialists who call themselves economists, generally rejecting most core economic principles. Many can be found writing for "The Economist".
