Whats wrong with this strategy ?

I've always thought if I were GM I would build my offense through Free Agency with proven players. There's always players that for some reason get away that are studs, Willie roaf, Priest Holmes, Thomas Jones, Chris Chambers and so on.

Focus your draft on defense, you need speed on D. This comes with youth. You can continually turn over your Defense through the draft with fast atheletic talent.

The bulk of your money would be spent on offense with proven players and you would continually have a young cheap defense.

There would be exceptions of course to draft a stud on either side every now and then.

Also this would soooo simplify the thought process.

Thoughts ?

This seems like a decent idea on paper...But I can imagine times when you might have to break your 'rule' like if there was someone you just couldn't pass up on offense. I think also that FA's (the decent ones) are so expensive that you probably couldnt fill your entire offense with them just based on the cost versus effectiveness. You would need draft picks to supplement it.

I think it is a good tactic though, at least it sounds good to me on paper! I am a big fan of speed on defense too for sure..so I guess that's why it makes sense to me.

I would +rep you if I could, but I think my account is still on newbie status or something.

it's essentially a great recipe for one and done's in the playoffs. hell, it may even get you a 13-3 record, first round bye, and butt****ing in round two. don't bother with the lube, colts and broncos.

Draft:

Free Agency

Utility RB
2 and 3 WR

In other words, I believe you build championships through the draft.

As a rule good defenses win games, i do believe in that. I would be happy with a solid pick or two for our defense.

We need offensive line protection for Cassel though. That problem needs addressed as well. It will help open up the running game and give our receivers time to complete their routes.

that's fine except for it still comes down to player evaluation

tbh it doesn't matter which way you go if you do a good job of picking players.

If you already had a good offense in place then I would like it.

My thought is that this is ****ing Stupid.

The players you listed offensively (Roaf, Holmes, etc.) were damaged and didn't last long. The "window of opportunity" is extremely short in that case and with Roaf, the Chiefs gave up a third rounder and didn't get a playoff win. Thomas Jones is 32 years old. If he contributes this year, fine. But history proves that older backs hit a wall to where they're just DONE.

Build your team through the draft or go 17 years between playoff wins.

It all starts with a franchise quarterback.

From that point forward, I agree with you for the most part.

You should never restrict yourself to one strategy.

You should always be thinking of ways to be innovative to stay ahead of the competition.

All I'm saying is that if you target offense EVERY year in FA you can bring in players capable of getting you to a superbowl because there are ALWAYS dumbass coaches like McDaniels getting rid of the Cutlers,Marshalls and Shefflers. Offense is more technique and skill than speed.

By targeting defense every year with your draft you are keeping fresh legs with speed which is what you need . This doesn't mean you won't have players that are good getting their second contract with the team. Every year you draft 7 for defense and 1 special player you like for offense. Every year you get 1 or 2 starters for D through the draft and 3 solid backups.

It just seems like we never get anywhere drafting crap all over the place.

In fact go through all the offensive FA players that moved to other teams in the last three years and tell me you couldn't put together a playoff type offense.
