Interview: Brandon Carr

http://blog.mlive.com/flintjournal/t...worth_gra.html

Not much here, but it is the off-season and I thought people would like to hear what Carr had to say:

Interview: Carman-Ainsworth grad Brandon Carr of the Kansas City Chiefs discusses his golf outing and the Chiefs' talented and young secondary
By Patrick Hayes | The Flint Journal
May 12, 2010, 4:30PM

Brandon Carr is part of a Chiefs secondary that could be among the most aggressive and best in the NFL next season.

Carman-Ainsworth and Grand Valley State graduate Brandon Carr enters his third season in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs as a mainstay in the secondary, starting all 32 games in his first two seasons.

Now, Carr finds himself in a dynamic and young unit in the defensive backfield that includes fellow two-year starter Brandon Flowers at the other corner, first round draft pick Eric Berry, a safety out of Tennessee, and Javier Arenas, a second round pick who will be a nickel back.

Carr will be back in the Flint area June 26 for his second annual golf scramble at 9 a.m. at Sugar Bush Golf Club in Davison. Registration is $80 and includes 18 holes of golf, lunch, a reception (meal included), raffles and an autographed team picture with Brandon Carr and Dan Skuta (C-A grad who plays for the Cincinnati Bengals). Proceeds benefit the C-A football program.

Below, Carr discusses his golf outing, his hopes for the NFL season and what it's like to come from a Carman-Ainsworth team that produced four players who have been in NFL camps at some point, with three currently having NFL contracts (his responses in italics).

It's your second year doing the golf outing, do you plan to keep doing this and how did last year's event go for you?

Last year went pretty well. It was our first time doing it, like a little trial run, but I want to continue to give back to my school and my community and provide things that we didn't have coming up as far as equipment and being able to go to different camps as a team. It's just about giving back, that's where I'm at right now. I've been blessed with this situation and just want to help those around me.

Do you think this is an event that can keep growing?

That's our vision right now, just to let it grow and improve each year. We're definitely trying to add guys, hopefully get some teammates to come back and show their face around the community, just be positive and show positive role models to the kids.

How's your golf game this year, last year it was a little off. Have you worked on it at all this year?

Not yet. We've been working out and just running and lifting like crazy, so I've been pretty tired. But I stay like five minutes from the golf range, so I'm going to set up some lessons so I can bring a little game this year.

Todd Carter, another one of your former Carman and Grand Valley teammates, just signed with Carolina. That's now four of you guys (Dan Skuta with the Bengals and Otis Wiley was in camp with the Lions last year) from the same high school team who have had a shot in the NFL. What does that say about Carman-Ainsworth football and what does it do for guys currently playing there to see that success you guys have had?

Hopefully it's motivation for them that hard work and continuing to believe and being persistent in your goals will pay off if you're serious about trying to get to the next level. Who would've ever thought us kids from Carman-Ainsworth would play in the NFL? It's a dream come true for us, but hopefully it will inspire the younger guys looking up to us.

Flint's really been known for basketball the last several years, but with you guys in the NFL, with Mark Ingram winning the Heisman, do you feel like it's becoming a football town too now?

Most definitely. I'm pretty sure there's going to be a handful more guys make it in the next few years, so we're definitely switching that perception that it's just a basketball town.

Did you pretty much start working out and getting ready again once last season ended, or did you get any time off in there?

After our last game, I took a month and half that was just straight not doing anything related to football, just letting my body recover. Nine months out of the year, we're always on the go with lifting weights and running. I learned from last year, from the veterans, who are always in your ear telling you when you get your time off, take advantage of it, treat your body well. I started back up in the middle of March, started getting my mind right for the upcoming season.

The Chiefs added two more playmakers in the secondary in the draft in Berry and Arenas. You guys have a young but talented unit, do you feel like you guys can be among the best in the NFL with that talent?

Just the whole vibe around the facility right now is just very positive and uplifting. The coaching staff and organization did a good job in the draft bringing in guys that are going to help us win ballgames. Especially in the secondary, getting guys who had great success at the collegiate level.

Other teams in your division have some question marks, made some big changes. Do you feel like you guys can take a big step forward and compete for that division title?

No doubt. We came along towards the end of the season, we were under a new coach (Todd Haley) and guys were trying to feel out the situation. Now, guys know what to expect from the coach, he knows what to expect from us, we're all on the same page. That win at Denver at the end of the season really gave us momentum heading into 2010. We're just saying for 2010, we're 1-0 and we're trying to build on that.

I call bullshit here and obviously Carr doesn't know what he's talking about. I have read from posters on CP that Haley is hated by the players, and that they hate playing for him and that they don't respect or like him. That his method doesn't work in getting guys to respond.

I know if I was a player I would be upset too. I mean who doesn't want some fat ass coming to the locker room after a practice or game asking the same damn question five different ways every single ****ing week?

The question is can the cover for 30 seconds on every passing play? If so then they deserve the title of the best.

Exactly. Well said.

Herm was buddy/buddy with the players and they played like dogshit.

They are getting paid to win games, if Haley is hard as hell on them and they produce, I'm fine with how he handles his team.

considering that the Chiefs have probably over 3+ million fans world wide, I would say that the 3-4 that you are talking about are truly in the very minimal minority.....

Oh I agree. We just had some posters here saying Haley was hated by the players, that his style doesn't get through to these guys, etc so forth and so on.

Of course Haley came in as a hardass. But as the season went on you could see him bond with the guys on the team and vice versa. It's not the "Patriots way" it's what Parcells taught him. Tough love. Guys with strong testicular fortitude respond to it. Guys who are leeches and lazy don't and you weed them out.
