Texas GOP Wishes to Punish Straight People Who Support Gay Rights

Sometimes it's a sad world we live in.

http://gltnewsnow.com/2010/06/19/tex...rt-gay-rights/

The 2010 GOP platform in Texas supports laws that criminalize sodomy and suggests that straight people who support same-sex marriage should be penalized with jail time. The GOP platform was quoted as openly stating:

“We oppose the legalization of sodomy. We demand that Congress exercise its authority granted by the U.S. constitution to withhold jurisdiction from the federal courts from cases involving sodomy,” the GOP platform reads. Meaning that even though the U.S. Supreme Court overturned sodomy laws last decade (ironically in a case that stemmed from Texas), Texas Republicans would like the state to have the power to criminalize LGBT folks for having sex.

“We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such,” reads the GOP platform.

If a straight person were to aid and abet a gay couple with marriage in Texas, th GOP would like to see that person serve mandatory jail time.

“We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases,” the platform reads.

The punishment wouldn't be for supporting gay rights, it would be for issuing a license illegally or performing an illegal marriage.

It doesn't say you're being punished for "supporting gay rights"

I know there is at least one suit here in Texas where a gay couple, married in Massachussetts, wants to get a divorce and the state says since it does not recognize the union, there is nothing to dissolve. The couple wants the court to be involved with the distribution of joint property.

Interesting state I live in some days.

Agreed, but it's still trivial and silly.

But they have not lived there in a couple of years. Do you want to go back to the state where you got married to get a divorce after moving across the country?

Here is a story on the mess:

To answer your question: My marriage is legal in the state in which we now reside, so it can be legally dissolved there as well. These morons didn't have the foresight to think about the implications of moving to a state that doesn't recognize their marriage. Tough shit.

Look, Massachusetts brought home a cute puppy and named it gay marriage. That's fine with me. I think their courts stole the puppy and it isn't rightfully theirs, but that doesn't have anything to do with this situation.

Now the puppy named gay marriage has grown up and it's taking a shit in Texas's yard. Well, it's not Texas's responsibility to clean up that mess. It's Massachusetts's dog and they can bloody well pick up the turds.

Wow. Have fun being a minority party in a few years.

Don't forget, Texas has a state constitutional amendment stating that marriage is between a man and a woman. This place is pretty conservative (downright old fashioned outside the cities), this may not actually hurt them as much as you would expect.

Nah. They'll morph. They always do.

Then when we bring to their attention that they have an intensely intolerant past, they'll say "that was then."

It's always how these things work out.

Do you really want to open that can of worms, Ms.? I'll give you some time to retract that statement before we go Byrd hunting...
