PC vs Victory: How far should I go to win a game.

I'm playing a scrabble-like game on my iphone called Words With Friends with a casual acquaintance (the 30ish mother of a child on my kids' sports team). We've played a couple dozen games since the beginning of the summer with both of us winning our share. She's a good player.

I'm kind of competitive when it comes to games and I much prefer winning to losing. In my current game, I'm behind by 50 points with only 11 tiles left to draw so we're getting late in the game. I have a chance to play a 69 point word right now, which is a pretty extraordinary scoring opportunity. It's probably my only chance to get back into the game, but the word is Q U E E R S. I'm not even certain that WWF will accept it as a legitimate word, but the only way to find out is to try to play it. If the word was just "Q U E E R", I wouldn't hesitate to play it because it can be a non-offensive adjective. But since I need to make it plural to rake in the points, it becomes a pretty offensive noun.

My question is should I eschew political correctness and go for the win or should I accept the probable defeat and limit my vocabulary to that which I'd use in polite company? Poll to follow.

I've been told that Q U E E R S can also be a noun that describes counterfeit currency, but it sounds pretty archaic to me so it probably wouldn't be the first thing that pops into my opponent's head when she reads it.

FWIW, I don't think she'd be offended by my use of the word nor do I think she'd assume that I'm a gay basher, so I'm not really worried about that.

do it. she is comfortable enough with you to play word games on her phone, so she should be okay with seeing the word queers pop up on the game board.

then again, if she has a life partner, all bets are off...

Depends on how well you know her. If I didn't know her well at all, (or not enough to know that she would laugh it off) I wouldn't do it.

It is beyond PC, there is no context where the word is not offensive. (other than a comedy routine by a gay guy?) I wouldn't mind, but a lot of people would probably smile while quietly beginning to socially distance themselves from you.

Oh. Well, in that case, if she'll know that it is more an abstract archeological "and in early-21st century america (smokes long-stem pipe, strokes beard) there was a word 'queers', which was a popular derogatory word uttered by..." thing, then what's the problem?

wasn't queers a self-descriptive term used by the movement in the 80s and 90s? if so, then no one should find it offensive.

Listen, if it were something like F A G that didn't give you many points I'd just let it go, but Q's are worth so much you have to play it.

I have to admit, the fact that a Q is involved is what made me really think hard about it. I can see the dilemma. I wouldn't play F A G at all, unless I was London.

I realize this is long ago and far away, but if the game is on hold...

I assume you need the "s" to get "triple word score" or something; there's no other reason to waste it.

I say go for it - not using the word queers your chances to win.

Go for the win. Acknowledging the existence of an epithet is not the same as using that epithet.

Is the woman attractive? This has nothing to do with the question. I'm just asking.

I wouldn't use it myself. I'd wait for the opportunity to use a much more sexually suggestive word, like 'orgy' or 'labia'. Those words are much more likely to end up with you seeing her naked, and they'll lose their power if you've already played your vulgar word card.

I thought the word queer was actually considered an acceptable term.

Not that I would use it. I think it's like one of those things with the n-word. There are rules. Like I think it's ok to say that someone "is queer." than to say some one "is a queer."

And the Q lands right on a triple letter score!

Ah ha! It's a perfectly acceptable verb! Nice job.
