Helmet-to-helmet hit gets Kendrick Lewis fined

Helmet-to-helmet hit gets Kendrick Lewis fined

Chiefs safety Kendrick Lewis, a rookie from Mississippi, was fined $5,000 this week by the NFL for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland tight end Evan Moore, lAFC information manager Corry Rush confirmed to The Star on Friday.

The Chiefs were penalized 15 yards in last week’s game against the Browns after Lewis was flagged for his hit on Moore, which Cleveland coach Eric Mangini said resulted in a concussion.

Rush said the league determined that Lewis’ hit was unnecessary roughness on a defenseless receiver.

Lewis, a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, started at free safety Sunday in place of Jon McGraw, who was held out because of a hamstring injury.

Weis sees progress in Cassel at QB

Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said Friday that he noticed improvement in quarterback Matt Cassel’s play from one half to the next in last week’s win against Cleveland.

Cassel was more efficient, completing 67 percent of his passes after halftime, compared with 50 percent in the first half.

“Stepped up nice,” Weis said of Cassel. “Matt will just continue getting better each week. I like our offense. The No. 1 objective of our team is just to win football games, and his No. 1 job is to manage the team. And I think that when you walk out of there not playing your best football and sitting there with another win, that’s a good feeling.”

Practice moved to Arrowhead

Chiefs coach Todd Haley held the team’s morning practice in Arrowhead Stadium, he said, to help familiarize players with the environment they’ll play in Sunday.

“I just like being up there,” Haley said. “I don’t know whether it has a positive effect for sure, but I heard one time that if you study for the test where you’re going to take the test, that your results go up.”

The change of venue also followed what Haley did before the Chiefs’ season opener against San Diego, when the team held one practice — and tried to hold another one, before weather forced the team indoors — at Arrowhead, to simulate what they’d experience during the game.

Haley said he might make this a game-week habit, particularly if he sees a benefit.

Injury report

Defensive end Tyson Jackson (knee) and right tackle Ryan O’Callaghan (groin) missed Friday’s practice, and both are listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game. Defensive back Donald Washington sat out Friday, but the Chiefs said that it wasn’t related to an injury.

Safety Reshard Langford (ankle) is questionable, and linebacker Tamba Hali (foot), safety Jon McGraw (hamstring) and defensive end Wallace Gilberry (back) are probable.

For San Francisco, center Eric Heitmann (fibula) is out for Sunday. Wide receiver Ted Ginn (knee) and cornerback William James (ankle) are doubtful. Linebacker Takeo Spikes (knee) missed Friday’s practice and is questionable for the Chiefs game, and running back Anthony Dixon (back) is probable.

The guy lower his head when Lewis made the hit..... And also Alex Mack was fine $5,000 for an unnecessary roughness call on Derrick Johnson

Well, as I recall, any blow that causes the receiver's skirt to fly up and show their 'giner is automatically considered unsportsmanlike conduct.

Clark should give that 5K right back to Lewis in the form of a "that's how you play safety in the NFL" bonus.

How do you think Tatum and Woodson and others made a living in the NFL? They made sure a receiver knew that the middle of the field belonged to them. Even in HS ball the first hit is the most important in the game. Deep down inside you know after that 1st hit who is the the winner/tougher/stronger/meaner player and who's gonna flinch on the next collision. If they take that away from the defense then they might as well go ahead and switch to Arena ball.
