Not bad. The only non-lame, halfway witty non-football post I have seen you post. I don't agree with the message, but the execution is good. The message cancels a creativity rep I would have given you.

But JMO besides blaming the shooter the blame should reside with the parents. They knew he was in trouble and did nothing about it.
I'm with you up until the last paragraph. You can't blame the parents when you know so little about what was going on. They may or may not have done everything they could to raise this kid right and intervene with any problems he had, but you can't lay this kind of thing on them without some evidence of extreme negligence and even then I'm not sure that's fair.

But I'll say right now that even if he specifically read Sarah Palin's website and decided to kill the Congresswoman because the gunsights on her graphic were speaking to him, Sarah Palin is blameless. There was nothing wrong with that graphic. There's nothing wrong with using war language in political campaigns. It's been done forever and there's no reason to stop doing it. We can't childproof/insanity-proof the world.

Perhaps he's afraid for her because some of the people saying the hateful things just might be looney enough to carry their hate a step or two further without regard to the manner in which Keith Olbermann explains his position on the matter.

If Palin really knew what the phrase meant, then she is a complete and utter moron. If you are in her position, when the media is starting to realize that they were a bit hasty, there's a bit of sympathy for you, etc. and a calm rebuke is in order, you don't pull the "blood libel" card out. Who the hell are you? You are some hack politician who was plucked from obscurity, looked bad on TV, then quit on the people who elected you. You have no right to act like you are the victim of evil German propaganda.

Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck handled this far better and with more dignity than Sarah Palin. When you look like a cartoonish caricature next to those two, that is just sad.
This is idiotic. First of all, for someone who looked into the history of the term, it's strange that you're still relating it to evil German propaganda. It's not German in origin.

Second, there's nothing wrong with using the phrase. It's not anti-Semetic. It doesn't diminish the persecution of Jews. It's a phrase that has come to mean nothing more than a baseless accusation meant to demonize and it fits fine in this context. It may have been a political mistake because it gives political hacks the opportunity to take advantage of fools who apparently didn't know the phrase before today and mistakenly think there is something terrible about using it, but that's all it is.

Your Palin hate is making you say foolish things, alnorth.

This is a well-stated post.

I feel like people are so emotionally put off by the tragedy, that they're going through an odd kind of grieving stage. It's the whole, "Why can't we all just get along?" sort of thing that was somewhat present after 9/11. People are so determined to prevent such a thing from happening again that they're losing grip on the world situation and the actual cause of the killings.

I have no idea about the intentions of Mr. Loughner, but his disestablishment sentiment points to a crumbling of democracy and all fabric of government. If he's paying attention to all the poop throwing, blaming, finger pointing, and shit spewing going on in the media over "violent rhetoric" I'll bet he's got a big grin on his face. Though... the guy's ****ing insane- I have no idea what kind of logic he's following or what would make him happy at this point.

I agree, Palin's reaction was idiotic. It was as if she had this obsessive need to always be in a headline or something.

Maybe her "Sarah Palin's Alaska" reality TV show featuring her kids and corny one-liners is not generating enough ratings and she needs more people to pay attention or something.

That is the only thing that explains her bizarre, unwelcome, and thoroughly stupid use of the "blood libel" phrase, given all the baggage that carries.

"No assailant's bullet -- no twisted act of violence or cruelty -- can silence the sacred dialogue of democracy," Boehner said, according to his prepared remarks.

At the prayer service, which was attended by scores of lawmakers and held in an auditorium of the Capitol Visitors Center, Boehner also commended his fellow House members for responding with civility in the wake of tragedy.

"As our nation struggles to comprehend this act of savagery -- this fearful assault on all of our sacred responsibilities -- it speaks well of our institution that its members have reacted not with a torrent of accusations hurled at each other, but courageously, with a collective embrace -- the embrace of brothers, sisters, and countrymen. It is in that spirit that we assemble here today," he said.

I see nothing political in the least in those remarks.

I didn't see the speech, I only read quotes that have been included in stories. I didn't have a problem with anything that I read. It seemed to me he was telling both sides they've been too mean spirited.
I get that people might think that wasn't the time or place for a political message, but that's personal opinion, I guess. I don't know how I'd feel if I were one of the family members. I've never had anything like that happen to someone I know, so I can't say if I'd appreciate that he made a political point or not.
