Arrowhead vs. CenturyLink

Now we're cooking with gas.

http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/stor...e-record-crowd

'Chiefs vs. Seahawks' actually means 'Arrowhead vs. CenturyLink'

Forget the division races. Never mind the AFC and NFC wild-card hunts. Don't worry about matchups like Kansas City's mediocre receivers against Seattle's stout secondary, or Seattle's unstoppable rushing attack against Kansas City's immovable run defense.

We all know the Week 11 matchup between the Seahawks and Chiefs is all about pride: Who has the NFL's best home-field advantage?

The crowd's effect on a football game can't be ignored. Basketball and baseball players require less verbal communication, and atmospheres really only affect concentration. But when your quarterback can't audible, your left tackle can neither see the ball nor hear the cadence, and the officials can't hear your coach when he tries to get out of a bad situation with a timeout, you have bigger issues.

Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City and CenturyLink Field in Seattle are the NFL's noisiest and arguably most intimidating venues for road opponents. But when the Seahawks visit the Chiefs on Sunday, the taste of their own medicine shouldn't be too nasty — "been there, heard that," if you will.

Taking win-loss records, percentages, noise milestones, tradition, size and even visitor penalties into account, now's a good time to determine about which stadium players are more likely to say, "damn it, I hate playing there."

TRADITION

Arrowhead's construction was completed in 1972, and it underwent a renovation project in 2010. CenturyLink, then called Seahawks Stadium, opened in 2002. Further, the "Home of the Chiefs" is home to only the Chiefs now days, and it exists as part of the first-ever constructed two-stadium complex adjacent to the Royals' Kauffman Stadium. CenturyLink is a multi-purpose venue, and the Seahawks share it with MLS's Sounders. Sharing is caring, but it taints tradition.

Advantage: Arrowhead

SIZE

Arrowhead, the NFL's fifth largest stadium, seats 76, 416. CenturyLink, with size compromised for design, seats 67,000 but has the capacity for 72,000.

Advantage: Arrowhead

INTIMIDATION

Arrowhead may be bigger, but it's simple bowl shape is nothing pro athletes haven't seen. CenturyLink's exclusive design and acoustics make the smaller stadium feel much larger, and it's a unique experience for any first-time visiting player.

Advantage: CenturyLink

NOISE

This is the one Kansas City and Seattle fans love to debate. Although Arrowhead recently broke CenturyLink's Guinness world record, it's pretty close. Kansas City has the size, Seattle has the design, but they both have the rabid fans.

NFL on ESPN @ESPNNFL
The Seahawks will get a taste of their own medicine when they play at Arrowhead on Sunday #LoudNoises

Advantage: Arrowhead, for now

EFFECT ON OPPONENT

Seattle Seahawks @Seahawks
Seattle’s total of 121 opponent #falsestarts at CenturyLink Field since 2005, is tops in the NFL. #2012inReview #12s
9:45 AM - 8 Feb 2013

Advantage: CenturyLink

RECORD

Chiefs

Record at home last 10 years: 37-43 (46 percent)

Overall record last 10 years: 66-94 (41 percent)

Playoffs at home last 10 years: 0-1

56 percent of wins came at home.

Seahawks

Record at home last 10 years: 55-25 (69 percent)

Overall record last 10 years: 88-72 (55 percent)

Playoffs at home last 10 years: 7-1

63 percent of wins came at home.

Advantage: CenturyLink

OVERALL

Seattle's had the better team over the last 10 years, but the Seahawks' dominance at home is more impressive than that if the Chiefs. With more false starts in Seattle, more relative wins in Seattle and with such an intimidating venue, it's apparent size (and noise) doesn't matter.

Advantage: CenturyLink

I've never been to the Link, but it's hard to beat Arrowhead.

Although, CenturyLink can do this:

Same reason they didn't care when they were in the AFC West?

Seattle's "awesome" fan base is less than 10 years old. Already tired of the hype.

I hear so many people say this. It's a myth. That place was ROCKING even when the Seahawks sucked. In fact, the reason I give the edge to the Hawks fans is because of how loud they get when the team is bad. I've been to all 3 stadiums and I'm not biased. Seattle has always supported the Hawks minus a couple of years that Ken Behring owned the team and tried to take them to LA. They have sold out everywhere they've played for something like 13 straight years now.
