Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Cool.

We've got some orders out now for "lead" from the place in Winfield, but if I need to I will buy enough "lead" to run our brass out. My wallet is cringing at the thought.

I spoke with my local gun shop and they had a very good selection of semi auto rifles but not anymore. They also told me that can't order anything either. So they told me if I could get a gun online to do that and then they will provide the FFL. So that's what I did. I ordered a rifle and will have it shipped to them. I don't even want to know about ammo. The rifle I ordered uses a hunting round so maybe it won't go sky high (.308). The rifle I ordered has one magazine that comes with it.

Yeah, I got the department for some rounds, schools, training, etc. I'm just now thinking I should go into brass saving mode and then start learning to reload.

I'm less worried about the mags than I am about the rounds at this point.

Ok.

So I'm in the market for a solid, affordable rifle.
I'm leaning .308 right now, but I'm open to suggestions.
I don't want anything much bigger, I don't want anything high end, just a solid, straight shooting all around gun to shoot anything from pigs to whatever I want. Assume my range to be 100-300 yards for most of what I'd ever do with it and suggest a reasonable scope to go with it.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Mossburg rifles out now?

I shoot a 7mm-08, great all around caliber and it doesn't kick the snot out of you. Check out Savages if you're really budget conscious or Marlin. Otherwise Weatherby Vanguard series are really nice for the money albeit more.
And a really nice scope for the money is Redfield (as long as its a US made one) or a upper level Bushnell. You get what you pay for with optics.

Haven't priced it recently, but I don' think so. Perhaps 7mm mag.

A quick search and core lokts are about $30 a box, Winchester Silver Tips are closer to $40.

Id pick a different caliber. Im telling you the Feds will be putting the smack down on any ammo that is NATO related.
You watch what happens to 5.56,308=7.62,& 7.62x39mm.
22-250,25-06,243, Are calibers that wont be ****ed with in the near future

I am a big fan of the 308 round, for economical bolt action look into the Remington 710 or 770 comes with a bushnell cheap scope for about $400 out the door. For a better rifle grab a Rem 700 in 308, whichever style you like best. Throw a leupold vx2 ($300ish) or vx1 (rifleman? $150ish) and call it good.

While the risk of limited ammo is a valid concern, they are also the most abundant and likely to continue to be made in bulk for military. If bad shit ever happens it will be easier to find more ammo in those calibers than the unique ones.
