Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

I got your bi-pod in the mail today. Thanks! I learned over the weekend how useful it is, too.

Drove to an outdoor range on Saturday with my friend who just picked up a new AR. We're both experienced and skilled with pistols, but when it comes to assault rifles and nifty optics, we're both n00bs, and boy did we get an education on exactly what sort of n00bs we are.

For starters, we went there with a cheap red laser bore sight thinking we'd be able to use it to zero our holo sights (he's got an Eotech). WRONG. Red lasers are useless beyond 25 yards, especially in daylight. This meant we needed binoculars or a spotting scope, which we didn't have. I was able to rent a scope from the range, but that brought us to the next problem - the wind.

I have no idea how many MPH the wind was blowing, but it was God awful. The only things that wouldn't blow away the second we sat them down were full magazines and the rifles themselves. Everything else would blow all over the place. It was maddening. Neither of us could keep the scope on the target while the other was shooting because the wind made the scope impossible to steady. Each little thing that went wrong pissed me off just that much more, and they compounded quickly. At some point I realized how utterly useless that light/grip combo I installed was, too. When I was shooting and not thinking about it, I didn't use it at all and frankly it just got in the way. A bi-pod would have been nice, though!

So, after floundering around in the wind like retards for a couple of hours, and accomplishing nothing other than pissing ourselves off and undoubtedly giving the experienced shooters a good laugh, we went back to a local indoor range and used our crummy bore laser to zero in our sights at 25 yards.

So, I guess I chalk this up to a series of humbling, yet important, lessons learned. The 3x magnifier I bought and the flip to the side mount for it which was the wrong height are being returned. The bi-pod is installed on the rifle, the grip/light combo are in the parts drawer. I guess if I ever decide to storm somebody's house at night with no thought to where any errant rounds might go, I'll put them back on, but outside of that they're useless toys that do nothing but add needless weight and get in the way. No more gimmicky crap that looks cool on the internet - I need to get my rifle sighted in and some experience shooting it. Period.

The only thing I need right now is a good pair of binoculars, a couple of 20 round mags and a return trip to the range at some point when there aren't gale force winds blowing.

Anyway, thanks again for the bi-pod.

Why 20 round mags? And yeah, that's why I got the grip + bipod in one, it's obviously complete shit compared to a real bipod, but it'll do in a pinch. Shooting with a vertical grip was much easier for me than without one. Of course, my gun probably weighs a lot more than yours.

In one of his earlier posts, TrebMaxx said that particular bi-pod works better with 20 round mags. I'll take his word for it.

bump for another shot at it. 2 grand, but if I could afford the best home defense guns, this would TOP the list.
Very accurate because of the V recoil system, .45 caliber
I think I saw that on Future Weapons.
Cool loading system that diverts recoil energy away from the shooter practically eliminating barrel climb in full auto.

Glad you got it and the USPS didn't lose it! I could still use the bi-pod with a 30 rounder on my AR, not on the AK, but depending on your quad it may be too short and you will need to pick up some 20's. Throw an empty 30 into the receiver and see if it clears with the legs fully extended. Might save you a few bucks.

You are welcome. Cleared some space on the shelf and I get to help a AR noob out at the same time. All win in my opinion.

Another suggestion if you dig having a bi-pod and want to upgrade. These are the best in my book and it's what I have on my AR.

http://www.harrisbipods.com/

The link is for the manufacture's site but you should be able to shop around and find them a bit cheaper.

Anyone owned a small Keltec before, like the P-32 or the PF9?

I need a smallish conceal carry type weapon that would work with dress clothes.

It's pretty tight with a 30 round magazine, but usable. I'll still pick up a couple of 20s next weekend, along with some better rail guards. The UTGs are comfortable, but just too bulky. A decent set of back up iron sights would be useful as well.

Thanks again!

That PF9 carries 9mm firepower in a package small enough to be concealed with just about any type of dress. Mine is nearly impossible to see even inside the pocket of a pair of jean shorts. That 9mm is a bit snappy in a 13 oz gun if a person is uncomfortable with recoil. It's not the most accurate, but is good enough for close range self defense. Mine feeds pretty reliably with most ammo but does not like the heavy 147 grain loads and will jam on them. Crimson Trace makes a laser sight that may suit you well if you ever have to use it in a low light situation. The factory sights would suck for this IMO.

So I finally got out to the range this past Saturday with my Sig556 and it rocks. I only have the factory "diopter" sights, but got sighted in pretty good at 100yds. My red dot is supposed to arrive today so I'll be re-sighting-in with that.

So I also got two 30 round Magpul Pmags with the window. When I load 30 rounds, it only goes down to the '25' marker. Is this normal? I thought maybe I had miscounted, but couldn't get any more to load.

Yeah, that's normal. The little red line shows you the ammo level, not the rounds themselves.

Anybody own a SM MP40? Looking for a service weapon and it's either going to be a glock 22 40 or SM mp40 .40. seem to be around the same price and both get solid reviews.
