Atheists, Work With Us for Peace, Pope Says on Christmas

VATICAN CITY Pope Francis, celebrating his first Christmas as Roman Catholic leader, on Wednesday called on atheists to unite with believers of all religions and work for "a homemade peace" that can spread across the world.

The message of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem was directed at "every man or woman who keeps watch through the night, who hopes for a better world, who cares for others while humbly seeking to do his or her duty," he said.

Strange to hear of a Pope addressing the non believers in such a way. Good on him, but strange.

It is a meaningful and worthy message.

Christians always reach out to non believers. Good to see it recognized so some may feel comfortable in their travels to the church. The media took a bit of liberty with the headline. He invited nonbelievers and did not use the word atheists.

Close enough. I grabbed it from a secular humanist site that I frequent, they passed it on with the original headline.

"I invite even non-believers to desire peace. (Join us) with your desire, a desire that widens the heart. Let us all unite, either with prayer or with desire, but everyone, for peace," he said, drawing sustained applause from the crowd.

I think I understand what he intends, but it might sound as though believers think that the nonbelievers have just been waiting for our invitation to make peace or that they need our help to make peace or that we're in some way specially equipped to make a kind of peace that they are incapable of making without us.

On the contrary, I can see why nonbelievers might be a bit skeptical of believers' ability to make peace even among the faithful, let alone among the nations.

I just took it as a religious leader making a universal plea for peace, appealing to humanity. He is religious and expressed that plea in religious terms but he also took the effort to make the appeal to people who do not share his faith. To me he is acting within the true nature of a universal (or catholic) church.

As an aside, if you can ever get the opportunity, Being in St Peters square for the Popes message is a fantastic experience. Plus the huge benefit of traveling in Italy at Christmas time avoids the huge crowds of summer.
