Wild cheers erupted from tens of thousands of demonstrators in Cairo's Tahrir Square after word spread that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has resigned. Demonstrators chanted "Egypt is free!" upon hearing the news.

So, was Tunisia the spark for Egypt or not?

It was the spark. I can spark my lighter, but that spark doesn't ignite a bonfire unless there are a lot of other factors that were already put into place.

I saw Egyptian tweets referencing how they were continuing the spirit of the Green Revolution.

But I guess it doesn't count because that wasn't a flag.

Oh that? Well, IIRC, I asked that question because I was inquiring about why Iranians would want to do such a thing. In order to garner international support.

I'm not advocating that, although I don't think it's nearly as far fetched as you do.

I'm just saying that poor people in the third world have a history of being lured by the siren song of socialism when economic times are tough and when they're coming out from under the heel of a repressive dictatorship. Islamist populism might appeal to the more religious folks, but for the "secular" crowd socialism is a bigger danger. The one thing that we have going for us now, as opposed to 25 years ago is that there is no longer a Soviet Union actively trying to export the international socialism revolution. The thing that we don't have going for us is that our President is comfortable with socialism and most likely doesn't see it as a negative.
