Doctor Who

Been meaning to start a thread on this for years and never have for some reason. Big fan of both the original (what I've seen/remember of it...) and the rebooted series.

Two iconic British television shows collided this week when The Avengers star Diana Rigg popped up on the set of Doctor Who.

The actress, 73, was pictured filming a guest role on the BBC series with Matt Smith and new assistant Jenna-Louise Coleman.

The trio were dressed in Period costume as they filmed scenes in Butetown, in Cardiff.

Mary Tamm who played the first Romana during the 4th Doctor years has passed away. She was only on the show one year because Tom Baker wanted his wife on the show, but she was the superior Romana.

I found it kind of repetitive. It also has some homo-erotic themes which may put off some.

For those who can't watch the trailer.

http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/doctor-w...ailer-analysis

Warning: this feature contains potential series 7 spoilers.

After almost nine months off air Doctor Who is once again gearing up for transmission.

With five episodes – kicking off with the intriguingly titled, Asylum of the Daleks – slated to air from late August, the BBC has released a new 90-second trailer to promote the upcoming season.

But what does the trailer contain? And how much does it tell us about the episodes to come?
Daleks, lots of Daleks... more after the jump.

Sounds like the first episode will be broadcast either August 25 or September 1st. The a small break til the Christmas special then a small break for the last 8 episodes (50th anniversary specials?) of the season, featuring the new companion.

The BBC has released summaries of the Doctor’s first three adventures in the fast-approaching new series. Read on to find out more…

Yesterday’s Doctor Who press launch is still sending out ripples across the pond of fandom (apologies, it's a dreadful metaphor kind of day) most recently with the release of these neat episode summaries for the new series’ first trio of adventures:

Episode 1: Asylum Of The Daleks - Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission - to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter... the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory’s relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Pond’s marriage.

Episode 2: Dinosaurs On A Spaceship - An unmanned spaceship hurtles towards certain destruction - unless the Doctor can save it, and its impossible cargo... of dinosaurs! By his side a ragtag gang of adventurers; a big game hunter, an Egyptian Queen and a surprised member of the Pond family. But little does the Doctor know there is someone else onboard who will stop at nothing to keep hold of his precious, prehistoric cargo.

Episode 3: A Town Called Mercy - The Doctor gets a Stetson (and a gun!), and finds himself the reluctant Sheriff of a Western town under siege by a relentless cyborg, who goes by the name of the Gunslinger. But who is he and what does he want? The answer seems to lie with the mysterious, Kahler-Jex, an alien doctor (yes another one!) whose initial appearance is hiding a dark secret.

September the 1st is still the date the smart money's on for the season's BBC One premiere, something we'll announce as soon as we've heard a bona fide confirmation.

Doctor Who series 7 kicks off with the return of the Daleks. Here's our spoiler-free review of Asylum Of The Daleks...

7.1 Asylum Of The Daleks

It’s no mean feat, Asylum Of The Daleks. The last series of Doctor Who kicked off with a two-part story, that gave the room to set up threads that would run right the way through the sixth series of the show (since it was revived). Here, it’s a standard-length standalone instalment instead, in the spirit of the series ahead of us. That means there’s less obvious longer-term seeds being sown, but instead an intense focus on delivering a cracking 50 minutes of television.

After all, there are no two-parters this time around. Each episode of the new series of Doctor Who is intended to be big. It’s intended to be a single blockbuster, a “first night”, to quote Steven Moffat. And for the first of the new run, Moffat has brought back the Daleks. No pressure there, then.

Before we go further, just a quick, regular house rule. This is a spoiler-free review. That means it’s going to be very. very light on story detail, and just give an opinion of the episode. You can read whatever you like into the words that follow, but we’ve been very careful in how we chose them. Read this page backwards, and you will not get extra clues or anything. If anyone attempts to spoil the episode for you, appropriate action should be taken.

So then.

Asylum Of The Daleks is a surprising start in one or two ways. After all, from the title, and the trailer, you might be thinking this is an all-out action blockbuster of an episode. It isn’t. It’s got more in common with a good, thinking survival horror movie, such as The Thing, than it has a rampaging Dalek war. That's aided by the fact that the excellent production design and effects work continues to close the gap on what you can see at your local Odeon on a Saturday night.

That’s not to say there aren’t Daleks, though. There are tons upon tons of the things, of varying vintages. What's more, Steven Moffat has found ways here to cleverly evolve them, and also pay tribute to their heritage. Even before the credits have rolled, there’s something that might just make long-term fans sit up with added interest. Just a little touch, to give further evidence that it's a long-term Who fan at the helm of the show.

That said, Moffat has described the Daleks as the most easily defeatable villains in the past, and perhaps that’s one reason why he’s never penned a full episode around them himself before. Predictably, though, he’s unpredictable in his approach, and he makes some very rewarding choices with how he chooses to involve the Doctor’s most infamous nemeses.

What’s particularly impressive is that he brings tension back to the Daleks – with the help of some excellent direction from Nick Hurran – for the first time since Robert Shearman’s terrific Dalek, way back in 2005. He also manages to play with them a little, and find interesting new things to do with a foe that’s been around for nearly 50 years. Asylum might not be your favourite Dalek story of all time (there is stiff competition in that regard), but it’s a very good one, and there’s a very clear effort that’s been made to shake things up a little.

It’s not just Daleks that Moffat’s concerned with in this episode, though. Picking up from the end of series six (albeit not directly), with people believing the Doctor is dead and Amy and Rory not travelling with him, Moffat spends some quality time with his lead characters. Particularly Amy and Rory, and how their relationship has developed since Christmas.

Which is as good a time as any to salute Karen Gillan, who gets better and better, and the underappreciated Arthur Darvill. Darvill is brilliant, whether as a generous comedic actor or as a core of emotion, and he’s on top form here. It perhaps goes without saying, too, but we’ll say it anyway, that Matt Smith utterly owns his role, and his ability to shift emotions in a split second remains a cherishable, rare talent.

The sum total of all of this is a really, really good slice of Saturday night fun, that puts a good Dalek story at the heart of an episode that’s impressive for reasons beyond its foes. It’s frequently funny – Moffat hasn’t lost his touch with excellent one-liners – and emotionally involving too. It also takes the Daleks to some quite dark places, with a fresh, unpleasant edge. And, as with many of Moffat’s episodes, it’ll ignite the Internet within seconds of it finishing.

Bottom line, and we'd better stop for fear of giving anything away, Doctor Who remains in tip-top condition, that much is clear. And as a kickstarter to what looks like a pivotal and massively ambitious series ahead, Asylum Of The Daleks is a very impressive way to begin. Congratulations to all concerned: it really is possible to continually evolve and subtlely change a show with such a long pedigree to it.

The series split, the Christmas special, live events, Matt Smith and more feature in a bumper round-up of new Doctor Who news...

This evening saw the press launch for Doctor Who series 7 (since it was revived), which featured a screening of the first episode, Asylum Of The Daleks. Our spoiler-free review of that is here.

But we also learned a few other things throughout the evening, that we’ve rounded up here. Most of this came courtesy of the Q&A after the screening (highlight: a young girl admonishing host Richard Bacon for calling her “little”). Here’s what we found out:

* The running sequence of the new series will see a first block of five episodes transmitted, then a break, then the Christmas special, then a break, then the last eight episodes in the spring. That’s generally what had been suspected, but it was confirmed at the event.
* The Christmas special, which is currently shooting, is set in Victorian times, revealed Steven Moffat (after conferring with Caroline Skinner).
* The title sequence to the show has undergone a slight evolution.
* There are plans, but nothing concrete yet, for more live events to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the show next year. In particular, Caroline Skinner cited the Proms, although she didn’t indicate that a new one was coming.
* Mark Gatiss has been wanting to do his upcoming drama on the creation of Doctor Who, which is set to be broadcast in 2013, since before the show was revived in 2005.
* Reports that Matt Smith has signed a new contract to 2014 are news to Matt Smith. In his own words: “It sounds like you’ve signed something else, when in fact I was always going to be around”.
* Of the episodes he’s written, Steven Moffat’s least favourite is The Beast Below (although there are ideas in it he likes very much). The one he’s proudest of (even if you don’t think it’s his best, he says) is The Eleventh Hour, given just how much ground it had to cover in one hour of television.

As for the transmission date, there’s no formal announcement that’s been made. We’ve read the new Internet rumour that suggests it might be 1st September, but nobody was telling us anything for definite. Expect an announcement soon, though...

At the press launch for Doctor Who’s seventh series since its revival, we’ve had confirmed the first five episode titles…

The seventh series of Doctor Who is a but a few weeks away from hitting our screens, and before today, we sort-of knew the names of the first four episodes (one of them has now changed). Now, we also know the fifth.

Episode one, by Steven Moffat, is Asylum Of The Daleks. That’s followed by Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, by Chris Chibnall, with Toby Whithouse’s A Town Called Mercy lined up for episode three.

Episode four is now called The Power Of Three (it was called Cubed before), and that too is from Chris Chibnall. And the first block of episodes will come to an end with episode five, which it’s been revealed is called The Angels Take Manhattan. Steven Moffat has penned that one.

More news on Doctor Who, as always, as we get it…
