Georgia Senate Passes Arizona-Style Bill to Restrict Illegal Immigration

I wonder if Bum **** Barry will sue another state for asking people who break the law to show ID while telling American's they'll be thrown in jail for not paying into his mandatory health care bill.

http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news...n-ncx-04122011

ATLANTA - Despite thousands of residents expressing their opposition to the legislation, the Georgia Senate Monday approved an Arizona-style crackdown on illegal immigration.

The Senate approved House Bill 87 after almost three hours of debate in a 39-17 vote, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

However, lawmakers eliminated a contentious piece of the bill which would have required businesses to register their workers on a federal program called E-Verify. The program determines if they are eligible to work in the US.

Because it was substantially amended the bill must now return to the House for its approval, before it can be signed by Gov. Nathan Deal.

Like the law enacted in Arizona, Georgia's bill would allow police to question suspects about their immigration status.

It would penalize people who transport or harbor illegal immigrants or use fake identification to get a job in the US.

It is estimated Georgia is home to about 425,000 illegal immigrants -- more than Arizona.

Thousands of residents of Georgia have protested the bill -- both in demonstrations outside the Capitol and in petitions.

I was just going to ask that. I can only guess that these businesses employ a large number of illegals, and would lose out on a chunk of their workforce.

The same people who are against using ID at the polls I would guess. You know, people who don't belong there.

The argument by civil rights groups is that E-Verity is not perfected and may prevent a valid candidate from receiving a job.

It's currently a mandatory process for anyone being paid via government contract and in that sample pool they've experienced zero (not exaggerating here, not one) problems.

It's more bullshit basically.

Whenever E-Verify becomes a profitable venture, we'll see it used everywhere. Sad that it has to come to that.

There is less here than meets the eye:

Some lawmakers predicted Monday the House would not agree to the Senate changes and would instead offer its own amendments or seek to appoint a committee to hash out differences between the two chambers.

"We will try to work things out and get things perfected in the conference committee," Republican Sen. Jack Murphy of Cumming, the sponsor of a similar immigration enforcement bill, said through a spokesman after the Senate vote Monday.

Time is running out. Thursday is the deadline for bills to pass this year’s legislative session. And while Deal campaigned last year on curbing illegal immigration in Georgia, he has not yet taken a position on HB 87.

Wish this would be done at a federal level.

Sadly, it will never be, as today's illegals are next generation's dependent class, AKA, the Democrats bread and butter

While that may be the underlying reason, I knew it couldn't be the stated reason, so I looked it up:

http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wa...migration.bill

A bill before the Georgia legislature requires that private businesses with 10 or more employees check the immigration status of new hires. Bryan Tolar is the president of the Georgia Agribusiness Council. He's against the state mandating businesses to use the federal system, called e-verify.

"The state is already required to check the immigration status of their employees by completing an I-9. This is an extra layer to mandate that employers use a federal program to validate the employees that they're bringing on to their staff."

Pretty weak argument IMO, used to cover the actual reason that you have correctly identified.
