Students who detect bias in professors are actually just dumb

I don't agree with this study, but it's pretty damned funny. I actually can see it accounting for some accusation of bias, but I'm not living under the illusion that most upper level academics aren't fairly liberal.

http://gawker.com/5810764/study-coll...re-mostly-dumb

Study: College Kids Who Detect Bias in Class Are Mostly Dumb
Hamilton Nolan — Are you a college student who frequently detects political bias of one sort or another in your professors? Chances are, you're dumb.

A new study at an anonymous Southern university compared students' own level of resistance to personal and political change with their perceptions of how biased their teachers are. Surprise: correlation!

The study found that students — even in the same classrooms — didn't perceive bias in the same ways (or at all), and those who perceived bias were those who were resistant to changing any of their views. The finding extended to some who identified themselves as being far on the left and resistant to change, and who believed that they had some biased conservative professors. But among both left-leaning and right-leaning students who didn't score high on resistance to new ideas, there was little perception of bias.

To clarify this, for the dumb students who will, with any luck, composed outraged emails to us after being forwarded this post: while the research accompanying this study "found no evidence of real bias," it did find that kids who are very resistant to change thought their professors were biased, because the professor, perhaps, challenged the student's views. Since the student is paying money to the professor to teach the student with the implicit understanding that the student knows far less than the professor about the subject at hand, these findings indicate that the students in question—who mistake the educational process for "bias"—are dumb.

But I bet the study's authors were liberals.

That's pretty much the liberal handbook. If you don't agree with someone's opposing viewpoints, you just call them dumb, or a homophobe, or a bible thumper, or a right wing nut job, and so on.

You don't have to debate a point if you can just discredit your opponent with a label and simply dismiss their point of view. It's very convenient.

Aside from the part of the study where liberal students who thought they had a biased conservative professor were also called dumb.

...yup. some, but not all of the teachers here that are liberal love to engage in the "you're ignorant" mantra.

...that and popularity....some libs tend to put a lot of stock into what others might think about them, and it shows when they go after others. Employing the you are liked/disliked game, and should care what others think.

...it comes off as high schoolish.

I had a Psychology and Law professor in New Jersey who loved being a Jewish professor that was a proud Bush supporter. He was kind of a loon, but a very good professor. Actually, I think most great professors are borderline loons.

I'm so glad we don't live in a world where liberals are called naive, elitist, out-of-touch, or when they are voicing their displeasure of Sarah Palin: misogynist.

And our favorite: Alinskynizing Marxist Socialist Atheist Nazis.

Most of my loony professors were also brilliant, but not very helpful.

In grad school I had a brilliant loon professor who didn't believe in grades. That's perfectly understandable. In fact, I've always tried to get student input on their grades, which minimizes the importance of my assessment and requires the student to ask himself/herself, "What did I learn this semester?" But when I got a paper back from him, I looked for any comments or critiques, and all I could find was, "This is mostly good."

The last words on this man's deathbed will probably be a call number.

I've had both liberal and conservative teachers/professors. So long as it wasn't detrimental to my education, I never cared.

I always love hearing the point of view of smart people I respect. The idea that smart people shouldn't share their political interpretations of the world around them with me simply because I may disagree? That reeks of insecurity.

Insecurity is often (but not always) tied to a lack of intelligence, so that might explain the poll's results. More intelligent people are typically much more secure and can handle (even appreciate!) hearing opposing points of view. Less intelligent people are typically much more delicate about their sensibilities and hate having their beliefs challenged.

Reading comprehension isn't the strong suit of some of our posters.

There are definitely two sides to that coin; I just think it's much more the norm on the left...but then again, I'm biased.

Actually my youngest son is in part named after the most left leaning professor I ever had; a screaming liberal who taught sociology and actually opened minds and had an open mind to opposing viewpoints. Likely a rarity anymore.

His first sentence to our class was "I don't believe in God, I think Heroine should be legalized, I think Marxism is the best form of government, and I cuss like a mother ****er". Had my attention right off the bat.

I think Heroine should be legalized as well. Imagine a world where Wonder Woman could solve all of our ills. She could probably handle heroin addicts as well.

You forgot anti-Semitic when you question Israel.

I don't think liberals are elitist at all. In fact, I can't think of one that is elite.
