He's right. It's what I've been saying for the better part of the last two decades
With brief exceptions (the aftermath of 9/11, for example) it's been this way since the Iran-Contra years, through the Clinton and W. years....and it's merely gotten worse. Both parties need to grow the hell up.

But it at the end of the day it is true, the politics are damaging the country. I don't think it will get better either. People are more concerned about finger pointing than compromising for the betterment of the country. It doesn't help the government is totally corrupt with politicians completely bought off with elections funded by corporations and policy determined on behalf lobbyists rather than the people. We are a nation in complete decline. |

During the last 20-30 years it's become so entrenched, that like you, I'm not optimistic that we are going to ever get past it again. Both parties insist on digging in their heels, that "gridlock" of the 80s and 90s has become virtually a total shutdown of the ability to govern effectively. Personally, I'm a fan of gridlock; the government that governs best is a government that governs least...and all that. EXCEPT, the world and society have become far too complex and interdependent that government's role has emerged as an arbiter and referee to prevent abuses and exploitation. Governments cannot allow greed and corruption to destroy what previous generations have built. Right now, government is on the verge of allowing a privileged elite to destroy the nation that we became in the 20th century--by gutting the middle class. We are on the verge of a second Gilded Age. My fervent hope is that we will find politicians with the courage and leadership abilities of those that fought the special interests and lobbyists, then, whose only real focus is on me-me-me, rather than a government of, by, and for the people.

I would argue that demagoguery, as practiced by the lunatic fringe on both sides, and as illustrated by the birthers and the tea party (and, yes, Michael Moore, Keith Olberman, and MSNBC types,) are MUCH more responsible for this problem.

Not to mention the fact that the Government (Congress and the President) are among those elite.
