Will Bachmann's former church be as controversial as Obama's?

We all remember Reverend Jeremiah Wright and the stir caused by seeing a fired-up black preacher speak emotionally about America's faults (along with some ludicrous claims thrown in that nearly matched some right-wing pastor's views of God punishing New Orleans with Katarina, gays with AIDS, etc.), when Obama was running.

Obama was politically break up with the church, condemn the teachings, and deny his knowledge of Wright's views.

Michelle Bachmann's longtime church was the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minn (http://www.salemlutheran.org/home). The church belonged to a larger Lutheran church: the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) (http://www.wels.net/).

The WELS doctrine includes belief that follows a statement of Martin Luther's that the Papacy is the Antichrist. The church's position is that it is true that the Papacy is the Antichrist, that it is not a fundamental article of faith for a follower to hold, but that it is an important truth and God wants us to know about it (http://www.wels.net/about-wels/doctr...rist?page=0,2#). The website also endorses an ignorance-laden text that has been widely discredited as unfairly anti-Catholic: http://online.nph.net/p-2327-catholicism-today.aspx

Will this be as controversial as Obama's church membership was? Why or why not?

My initial opinion is that it will not be controversial. 1) Bachmann may not have legitimately known of the position. 2) Nobody really cares about one Lutheran sect's views about the Catholic Church. 3) Importantly, the reason why Obama's church was controversial is because it was so new and unique to many white Catholic and mainstream Protestant Americans.

Lutherans always face issues defending Hot Dish dinners and social hour after the Sunday service.

Was Obama's church really controversial? It seems like it should have been far more controversial than it was. He was a member for 20 years but got away with pretending that the guy he described as being as close as family was someone he didn't really know and then the issue disappeared.

I voted no because:
1) Bachmann will never be as likely to win the nomination as Obama was

2) Fewer Americans are defensive about the Pope than the US
But I don't think it will be much less controversial either, because:
1) Obama's church didn't end up being very controversial.
I suspect that she'll have to distance herself from some of her Church's teachings at some point. She won't be required to pretend that she didn't ever really know her preacher though. That would be moronic and only a dope would fall for it anyway.

Maybe if she was trying to become the Pope it would be. People's problem with Obama's pastor were because he cracked the US, right? And Obama was trying to become President of the country his pastor was criticizing?

Pretty much this, but, if she is still in the running in the later stages I think it does become an issue.
