Obama blames Europe for his Green Jobs failure

President Obama is blaming cuts in European solar power subsidies for his administration's half-a-billion dollar bad bet on a failed green collar California firm. In 2009, the Department of Energy awarded Solyndra, a solar power panel manufacturer, $535 million in low cost guaranteed loans. The company announced it will file for bankruptcy today. More than 1,100 employees are expected to lose their jobs.

Defending the Obama administration's decision to make the loan, a decision questioned by the Government Accountability Office, DOE Office of Public Affairs Director Dan Leistikow wrote:

The price for solar cells has fallen 42 percent since the beginning of the year -- even as European countries, currently the largest market for solar panels, are facing economic turmoil and have greatly reduced subsidies for solar power. The changing economics have affected a number of solar manufacturers in recent months, including unfortunately, Solyndra, a once very promising company that has increased its sales revenue by 2000 percent in three years and sold more than 1000 installations in 20 countries. As a result, Solyndra now plans to suspend its manufacturing operations and file for bankruptcy protection.

German subsidies for solar power production had made Germany the world's largest market for solar panels. But Germany has been cutting back on those subsidies recently in an effort to reduce their own deficit spending. Without generous government subsidies most "clean" energies, including solar power, simply are not economically sustainable.

Back in in 2010, Obama personally visited Solyndra's Fremont manufacturing facility celebrating his administration's investment in the firm as "a testament to American ingenuity and dynamism."
