how many here have blown an acl?

yours, not someone elses.

when did it happen?

how'd you do it?

did you know what you'd done when it first happened?

did you have it repaired?

how long til you were "as good as new"?

just curious...thanks,
sec

Knew it happened when I heard a loud pop. Did it twice. Once playing football, the other in the Army during PT.

Partially torn. Never had surgery, just a lot of PT. Knee was never the same.

I had a close friend tears his several years ago. He had it repaired, rehabbed a year and promptly tore the other one. Repaired that one and tore the one he had originally rehabbed. He didn't get the surgery the third time.

20+ years ago playing a summer league basketball game. A guy hit me high, a guy hit me low, my knee snapped. Which is generally how it happens in my experience - it's a contact injury although you will occasionally see a guy plant his foot wrong and go down. The injury didn't seem quite as commonplace then as it has the last decade or so, so I didn't know what it was, and it was actually a while before it was correctly diagnosed and surgery was scheduled. I played little league games on my 'trick' knee, had it go out a couple of times kicking off the side of a pool, but I kept doing everything. Which is probably how it ended up completely destroyed by the time of surgery. Treatment and rehab has changed a lot. If I remember my procedure correctly (and I may not, it's been a long time and I was 15 at the time...) they took a tendon from my lower leg and turned it into a new ACL by screwing it into bones. I had to rehab for a year, and I never really felt "as good as new" back in those days. Never really had confidence in my joint, and I was really ****ed in the head from then on (I'd been angling towards a college scholarship to pitch prior to the injury, and still could have had one after).

Nowadays, I don't even think about it. I ran for 30 minutes on it earlier today, bike 3 or 4 times a week, it's doesn't bother me any more than my other knee. No residual soreness or swelling or anything like that. Which makes me think my doctor back then (the sports surgeon at WVU) probably did a good job...

(knock on wood hoping I didn't just jinx myself)

Just today. I was walking down the street, going to the store, minding my own business when Stevie Johnson came out of NOWHERE and went for my knee.

Laid there for a minute and felt OK, so I got up and went in the store. Planted and tried to turn down an aisle and collapsed in a heap.

What happened 100 years ago when someone tore an ACL? Could they ever walk again?
