Gailey defends Johnson block on Berry

http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/1816

Buffalo coach Chan Gailey has defended the cut block by Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson that caused a season-ending knee injury to Chiefs strong safety Eric Berry in Sunday's game.

"It was a clean block," Gailey told reporters in Buffalo on Monday. We tell our guys: 'You go block those guys.' Because let me tell you, if youíre up in the air theyíre not going to hesitate to get you and take a shot at you because theyíre trying to separate you from the ball.

"Thatís an opportunity for our receivers to go down the field and hit those guys. Itís legal. It happened in front of me on the sideline in front of an official.

"To me itís not that. It wasnít the only person we went down and cut down field. It wasnít the only time we did it. I donít see any basis for that."

Gailey allowed that the departure of Berry opened things up for Bills' tight ends David Nelson (four catches, 64 yards) and Scott Chandler, who had a career day (five catches for 63 yards, including two for touchdowns) in the Bills' 41-7 romp.

"I think some of the balls David Nelson caught, thatís where Berry would have been and we ended up on either Jon (McGraw) or we ended up on (Sabby) Piscitelli. And that was the matchup that Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) went to which was smart."

Don't think there's too much bad blood between Gailey and Chiefs coach Todd Haley, who unceremoniously fired him in 2009, is there?

Gailey's a good coach. and by letter of the law, that was a legal block.

Johnson still knew what he was doing when cutting someone who isn't looking at him, from an 8 o'clock position.

The question still remains, this happened early in the game and yet our guys let Johnson still play? Whatever happened to get backs?

Well he has taken a team that was at least just as bad as we were and turned them around faster so what does that say about our coach?

True - but he's a very good OC. Still - he's taken a team that was very bad and might have them turning the corner...

This will be a running theme this season, methinks....

I hardly think that beating a team that was clearly not prepared to play (not to mention had some key injuries), indicates that they have "turned the corner."

If you're referring to my post I said, "MIGHT have them turning the corner." Time will tell...

They soundly beat a team in all phases that most thought they couldn't and they did it on the road.

This is a fraternity anymore, especially with all the player movement, nothing like the old days.

Did you see any retaliation when Trent Green was taken out with a cheap shot? When Priest was taken out with a cheap shot?

Nope, the players know they may be on that team next year.

And yet Steve Johnson still dove at a 'brothers' knees.

I'll never understand why they take some of the BS gratuitous shots they do. There is just absolutely no professional respect in the NFL.

What Steve Johnson did was legal - it was also bullshit. These guys all know the dangers of going at knees (especially WRs), but ol' Stevie didn't give a damn when he dove at a fellow ballplayers knees.

I'm generally above wishing an injury on someone...but I damn sure wouldn't be sorry to see it.
