SSD. This is a huge must if you are gaming or just want fast performance! if not. Doesnt really matter, just a decent one.

Eh, even for basic use, a SSD makes a big difference. You can get a 512GB on Amazon for ~$150.

If you're needing a ton of storage, it's not that cost effective, but for just basic use, it's well worth the money.

Are you using it for your operating system, or do you need one for storage?

If you installing an OS, then you definitely want the SSD.

I've always done the Intel SSD's but recently put in a Samsung 850Pro. Both are great, but the Samsung is truly outstanding. The new V-NAND is a game changer.

Do a quick google for SSD's, go to pcpartpicker.com and pick the cheaper of the "recommended" SSD's.

Intel - MX200
Sandisk - Extreme Pro
Samsung - 850 EVO

Those 3 are gonna be pretty much mentioned across the board with some other options scattered in.

If using an SSD with an existing PC with Win7, How can the SDD be used to boot the OS?
Does it have to be installed on the SSD?

Most SSD's come with data migration software that will clone your hard drive. So with a desktop, you plug in the new drive while the old is still in, migrate data, turn off computer & unplug old drive and you're done.

With a laptop, you need either a data migration cable or an external hard drive housing. I recommend getting the external housing so you can use your old hard drive as an external backup device after you're finished upgrading. Either way, you connect the SSD to your laptop via your external device, run the data migration, turn off computer and swap the drives in the laptop and your ready to go.

Unless you absolutely NEED that much storage, no.

Bare minimum, do yourself a speed favor and get a hybrid drive. Works faster boot up and general operating time.
