Secret to Chiefs winning streak: Bean Bag Toss

A game played by tailgaters and college kids may be the secret to the Kansas City Chiefs two-game winning streak. After the team's 0-3 start, coach Todd Haley brought in custom-made cornhole boards to help build team unity. Since adding the beanbag game, Kansas City is 2-0.


"We've been trying to figure out ways to create togetherness," Haley told Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star. "It's been great. It's a way to keep guys hanging around and interacting with each other, and winning helps out."

Jim Zorn, the Chiefs quarterbacks coach who's fond of tie-dye shirts and bohemian mantras, first suggested the team-building game. Haley's wife, Chrissy, contacted an acquaintance who builds boards and had one built specifically for the team. Given the popularity of the game, and the team's success since introducing it, Haley says more are on the way.

Covitz writes that long snapper Thomas Gafford(notes) is the best player on the team, with kicker Ryan Succop(notes), safety Sabby Piscitelli(notes) and defensive back Reshard Langford(notes) also showing beanbag-tossing prowess. Matt Cassel(notes) either doesn't play or suffers from the board's lack of Dwayne Bowe(notes)-like reception ability.

Take note, NFL coaches mired in three-game losing streaks. Cornhole is the key to success. And playing the Vikings and Colts in consecutive games doesn't hurt either.

Cassel holds on to the bean bag too long, then panics and makes a bad toss. Also hindering his ability to compete is the fact that the team ruled that neither bean bags bouncing off of the goal posts nor screen passes count.

Haley's plan was to build the team's confidence up slowly.

First he had to show them they were capable of winning at some kind of game.

The plan went astray initially when Cassel mistook Eric Weddle for a beanbag target.
