Unreal Estate Game: Virginia

Assume that you idly buy a state lottery ticket while getting a doughnut at 7/11, and voila! You're a winner! You win your choice of one the five houses that will be shown.

I'll give you five houses in a state, and you vote on the house you would take.

Background rules:

Assume that your job situation won't need to change - you can find an identical job or work from home or whatever, so jobs don't matter.

Consider the house itself and the location and anything else that's important to you (schools, restaurants, lot size, etc.). Feel free to do a google map search to check out the neighborhood and the area.

You cannot sell the home. You can live in it as long as you like, but when you move out, it reverts back to the state as a prize for a future winner.

All houses will generally be in the $900,000 to $1 million price range.

All maintenance and utilities and taxes are cost-neutral compared to your current home.

If you wouldn't move into any of these homes, you can instead accept a cash prize of $50,000 (tax free).

Today's state is Virginia. Here are your five houses:

Abingdon - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...ex=VA613915006

Cape Charles - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...0_M60907-34827

Falls Church - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...1_M52598-58204

Fredericksburg - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...1_M50848-87420

Norfolk - http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...7_M59681-00712

My rankings:

#1 - Fredericksburg - I'm a big fan of Fredericksburg, and this is a pretty good location for a number of reasons. It's close to the college, and you can walk both downtown and to the newer commercial area. The house isn't as nice as the one in Norfolk, but I like this town. You can also take a train directly into central DC if you want an outing, and I think it's a half hour or hour or something. I like the house, but this is really more about a great location.

#2 - Norfolk - It's a really nice house on a really cool street, and it's pretty close to restaurants. I'm not a big fan of southern Virginia, but this is about as good as you can get. I'm not sure how useful the garage is, but I could fix that. It's a close race for #1, because this is a top-notch property.

#3 - Abingdon - It's a really nice house, and the location within the region is pretty good. It's in the country, but you could also walk or bike to the town. It's a little exposed without many trees. I could probably live here.

#4 - Cape Charles - It's your basic beach house. It would be a great second home, but I wouldn't want to live there full time. It's not convenient to any services.

#5 - Falls Church - The house is really cool, and there would be some advantages in being close to DC, but that location is all wrong. It's not convenient to anything, and I wouldn't want to live in metro DC traffic. Great house, though.

I like the Yorktown one, though it kind of looks like a hotel.

Abingdom in a walk.

That place is pretty much my ideal home. Incredible house, great lot/location. I'd dig out a 5 acre lake at the back of it and be in heaven.
