2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Remember when greinke had his own catcher? Made a difference in his game. Might have been just mental but it made a difference.

Could be. And there's no question that a lot of pitchers are incredibly strange about all things surrounding their starts, and quite a few are mental pussies.

I do think that Perez might set a better target and frame a bit better, and these would have an affect over the long-term.

Coach Self would ask him why he didn’t make curfew and he’d say, “Because the club was crackin’!” Everyone would laugh and he’d make B-Rush run a little bit.

11 strike outs CG seemed to be shaking out his arm later in the game.

A lot of pitchers have and continue to use personal catchers, even if that guys isn't the normal starter, because they work well together and have a level of comfort/trust. It's pretty much the same thing I guess imo.
I was a pitcher through high school, and even at that low level, there were guys that I pitched well with vs. others. Some catchers you vibe with and that back and forth calling pitches snowballs. In addition, some catchers just present a target better and make the pitcher feel confident that he's going to frame things up for the umpire. You can't quantify it, but it's most definitely real. For me, a bigger catcher who didn't wait until the last minute to flip the mitt up as a target was helpful.

I remember reading that he's a very hard worker. Good stuff and potential to get better as he fills out physically. Great to see him start off so well.

Good insight. Thanks for that. I've always believed a good catcher... an elite catcher can change a game.

I'll echo what some of the folks have said re: catchers, and here's something else to consider...

My favorite catcher in high school was my junior legion catcher, and I always felt like I pitched better to him than anyone else. He was the best defensive guy I worked with. That let me worry less about throwing the breaking ball in the dirt on a 2-strike count - I was confident he was going to keep the ball from going to the screen.

He also had - by far - the best throwing arm of any catcher I played with. He was so good at controlling the running game, I didn't have to worry as much about it (didn't have to slide step, didn't have to worry about throwing only fastballs, etc.).

I wouldn't be surprised if some of that bleeds through with Perez, too.
