2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Just a random thought:

1. Keep Billy, a player who is largely undervalued and under-appreciated by many fans.
2. Spend money.*
3. Sign Jackson, a viable 2/3 starter (closer to 3, but whatever).

*and here's the crux.

Prince Fielder - 1B - Brewers
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers have signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million deal.
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports first mentioned the possibility less than 10 minutes ago, and now it has become official: Fielder is going to Detroit, the same place his father Cecil spent seven years of his career. The 27-year-old slugger should shine bright for the Tigers, more than making up for the production lost by Victor Martinez's knee injury in 2012 and helping the team remain in the rung of American League contenders for years to come. Fielder owns a .929 career OPS. He batted .299/.415/.566 with 38 home runs and 120 RBI in 162 games last season for the Brewers.

Well that's nice. I don't know if the final years of that contract will be worth it, but in the short term it helps their offense. At least the Tigers don't play in a bandbox where he can hit 60 homers.

Neither do we. He can his as many jacks as he wants against the rest of the league, as long as he's not killing KC as far as I'm concerned....

Kinda feel bad for the Brewers. Went all-in for last season & fell short. Not sure if they've got another 1B in the system or have plans to acquire one, but it kinda sucks for them.

Edit: what the hell is going on with Detroit? Has that city not fallen apart yet? There are people still going to games and watching the Tigers on TV in Detroit? How many more years till everyone's left that joint?

I approve this message. Especially since the Tigers just signed Prince Fielder...

It appears that the reports of Scott Boras' demise were greatly exaggerated. Whether some other team would have come close to it, or Detroit bailed him out we don't know, but in the future, the writers should save all their smug mockery of Boras and how he misjudged the market to his client's detriment until at least everyone signs or the season starts.

Don't know. I did get negged for calling the place a crap hole though.

Our Time definitely needs additional pitching help now.

Ugh. Yeah, that's the bitch of the whole situation; other teams are allowed to spend money and get better too.

Fielder going to Detroit is terrible, terrible news for KC.

Now you know how I feel when the Yankees or Red Sox sign one of their expensive players every offseason.

The bar for KC to contend in the AL Central just went up for sure.
