2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

It's late so I thank you for posting this appropriate response so I don't have to do it and think much.

Alex Gordon in 2012 so far: 2.6 WAR.

FFS. He's easily one of the most valuable commodities on the team, yet he's ridiculously underrated. He's not a "decent" lead-off hitter; he's a great one, and he plays great defense in LF. Note: appropriate use of "great."

You gotta trade something to get something.

We've been doing that for years, Dye, Damon, Beltran, Offerman, Ibanez (I thnk), Melke, Grienke. We've come out ahead on one of those deals. 1.

The time has come to actually spend some money, not trade 1 good player for a hopefully another good player. That's just an offset. We have a good core of players, Gordon being a part of that. It's time to actually up the payroll and add, not trade 1 for hopefully 1 which still leaves you with 1.

I think that linked article was pretty spot on. Get rid of Broxton, Frenchy, Boogiewaw and Sanchez. I really don't care what you get in return either. They are all handicaps and\or a waste of space. Bring up Myers, maybe Odor-easy. If, and I say If, you are going to trade one of your best pieces it has to be Butler. Why? Because he is a 1 trick pony. Gordon gives you a bat and defense. Hosmer gives you a bat and defense. Moose gives you a bat and defense. Escobar gives you a bat and defense. Perez gives you a bat and defense. Cain gives you a bat and defense. Butler gives you a bat. I don't wnt to trade him but that would be the odd-man out, imo when you look at the entire context of the team. Plus Butler would actually garner something of value in return.

I think this time is going to be a little different. We'll probably trade prospects for ML talent as opposed to the opposite like we normally do. I think I'd make Starling the centerpiece of a deal and see what you can get in return.

I agree with this. Billy is the definition of professional hitter, but that's all he's got. He does it well, better than most, but that's it. I don't think he can even be as good at first as an Adam Dunn, and that's not really saying much.

He'd have to stay in the American League, and unfortunately, most contenders in the AL are usually set at DH.

I think you can live with that deal. He isn't going to be ready for a couple years and we are stacked in the OF.

I definitely agree that Starling would be a good guy to offer to make a deal work. Myers is not much older and is in all likelihood a better hitter. Cain remains to be seen but he is here now and shows promise. And Gordon we know. Lets trade Starling in combination with one of our pitching prospects, maybe Lamb or Montogomery, and add whatever else necessary to get a ML starter. The Cubs would really like all the different options we could give them in return for Garza, who probably wouldn't cost too much. Contenders are after Dempster more than Garza.

Remember if you trade Starling, you better hit big time just because of the PR factor with him being a local player.

Does anyone have any "tweets" or quotes that'll make me hopeful KC may make a splash in FA this year.
