With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Reds are stacked in the SS position in the minors. DiDi Gregorius would be nice if he could move to second base. But I am probably dreaming.

The Cincinnati Reds acquired Kansas City Royals closer Jonathan Broxton and will make him their setup man, according to a high-ranking Reds' official with direct knowledge of the trade. He spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the trade has not been finalized.

Broxton has been outstanding for the Royals this year, with 23 saves and a 2.27 ERA, striking out 25 with 14 walks in 35 2/3 innings. He'll be setting up for Reds closer Aroldis Chapman and joining a bullpen that already led the major leagues with a 2.66 ERA.

Broxton's success this season mae him a valued trade commodity, and the Texas Rangers expressed significant interest in him. Now, they will have to re-tool before the 4 p.m. deadline.

The Reds, meanwhile, will have an embarrassment of bullpen riches. Chapman has struck out 94 batters in 49 2/3 innings. Set-up men Logan Ondrusek (2.95 ERA) and erstwhile closer Sean Marshall (2.61 ERA) also have been solid.

A righthanded pitcher from Curacao via Florida, Reds prospect JC Sulbaran has already vastly outperformed his 30th round draft selection back in 2008, mainly on the strength of his exceptional stuff: in his very first taste of high-A baseball, Sulbaran struck out 155 hitters in only 137 innings. A fly-ball pitcher who works high in the zone without fear (so far), his mechanics are a concern to many scouts, as his cross-fire delivery is difficult to repeat, leading to control issues. Still, his three-pitch mix and ability to confound hitters should be enough to propel him to AA ball in 2012 or 2013.
