2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Article about some Royals prospects in the Arizona Fall League.

Royals hitters in the Fall League
Orlando Calixte found some pop in his bat this past season at Class A Advanced Wilmington in the Carolina League, putting together his best overall season in the Minors. The slight-of-build (5-foot-11, 160 pounds) shortstop began his career in 2010 and has shown steady improvement. In his 63 games in Wilmington, he hit .281 -- his best to date -- with 28 RBIs and eight stolen bases. In eight games in the Fall League, he is hitting .303.

Brian Fletcher, whose career total of 49 home runs at Auburn ties him for third place in school history with Frank Thomas, is the son of 15-year Major League infielder Scott Fletcher, who is now the roving infield instructor for the Colorado Rockies. The younger Fletcher has struggled this fall in the early going, batting .170 in 14 games while striking out 21 times in 47 at-bats. The outfielder was an 18th-round selection (539th overall) in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft and played 65 games in Double-A in 2012 with a .256 batting average.

Alex McClure advanced to Double-A for half the season in 2012, hitting .212 with nine RBIs and six stolen bases in 12 attempts. As a shortstop in the Fall League, the 11th-round Draft pick (329th overall) in 2010 has hit .207 with three RBIs in his first eight games.

Royals pitchers in the Fall League
Edwin Carl, a non-drafted right-hander, began the 2012 season at Class A, where he was used mainly as a starter at Kane County before being sent to Wilmington, where he was 2-2 with two saves in 22 relief appearances. In his first 8 1/3 innings in the AFL, he has a 1.08 ERA. In 2011, he was named MiLB.com Short-Season Reliever of the Year.

Jon Keck is a 6-foot-6, 215-pound left-hander, who was 2-2 after his promotion to Double-A Northwest Arkansas in 2012. He struck out 42 in 42 1/3 innings with a 4.04 ERA. Keck, who holds the Bethel College career home run record (41), was selected in the 42nd round (1262nd overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. In his first seven appearances in the Fall League, he had an ERA of 8.53.

Justin Marks was a third-round pick (332nd overall) by the Athletics in 2009. The left-handed starter, acquired by the Royals in 2010, enjoyed an outstanding Fall League start. He went 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in his first five starts, making him the first 2012 Fall League hurler to reach four wins. It was nice lift for Marks, who struggled in his only start at Triple-A Omaha this season, allowing nine earned runs in 1 2/3 innings. He ended his college career as Louisville's all-time leader in wins, strikeouts and ERA.

Whenever I see this thread bumped I get a little excited that maybe there's some breaking news on a signing or something that may be happening.

Thanks anyway lew....

The difference is Planet Nibiru is going to kill us quickly, whereas the Royals have been killing us slowly for 27 years.

Joakim Soria's agent, Oscar Suarez, told Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York on Monday that his client would be willing to pitch as a set-up man for the Yankees.
Suarez has already heard from eight teams, all of them contenders, but the Yankees aren't one of them. It's more likely that he'll end up somewhere as a closer, but Suarez said his client would be excited to learn from his idol Mariano Rivera. "If the Yankees call, we will be all ears," said Suarez. "If there is a fit, Joakim would be elated to work with Mo. He would close everywhere except there." Soria is coming off Tommy John surgery and recently became a free agent after the Royals declined his $8 million option for 2013. Suarez expects his client to be ready for spring training.

Sadly, Soria probably has nothing left. We made the right decision. I wish him well, and hope he saved some of his money.

We should be able to sign at least a guy or two. Edwin Jackson and Brandon McCarthy would go a long way.
