2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

On the bright side, at least we get to get to watch the worst everyday player in MLB play RF and then attempt to upgrade the position with a bargain-basement find next off-season.

So.... DM has to be fired if we don't make the playoffs this year right? This was a "win now to save my job" move all the way.

Hey, look at the bright side. If you needed something to push you over the ledge, Dayton Moore just went ahead and took care of that for you.

What a gay trade.
The more I read about Davis, the less I like. There's nothing wrong with him, but he doesn't seem to have any tremendous upside. Shields is good, but only under contract for 2 more years.

Well, the Royals might be better in 2013 and 2014 from this trade, but they gave up a lot in 2015-2019. 5 years, for 2.

This looks like a bit of a desperate, short-sighted, "win now" trade. If they did win now, great but if they don't, this trade could look really awful.

Hey at least look at the bright side.

At least we got some starting pitchers for the top minor leaguer who would have never made a damned difference in the majors because JEFF ****ING FRANCOUER prevented him getting called up.

BRILLIANT!

This is so dumb, and could have been avoided if we had an owner willing to spend on an Anibal Sanchez so we didn't have to trade our top prospect for these two.

Rays wouldn't do Shields for Myers straight up, so Friedman threw in Davis (who isn't good at all) and Dayton threw in more prospects.

Unbelievable.

Rays agree to send James Shields to Royals in trade

The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a trade that will send All-Star starting pitcher James Shields to the Royals, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman is reporting. More details are forthcoming, as there are bound to be several players involved.

Shields, 30, was 15-10 with a 3.52 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 223 strikeouts in 227 2/3 innings pitched last season for the Rays. He is only one year removed from finishing third in AL Cy Young voting, as he had a huge 2011 campaign.

Shields now slides neatly atop the Royals' starting rotation, ahead the likes of Jeremy Guthrie, Ervin Santana and Bruce Chen.

That ****ing pisses me off also. This is the most miserable year of sports I can remember. Shitty thing is, Royals couldn't even wait until their usual mid-May departure from contention...this year couldn't even get halfway through the off season.
