Roku Box?

I'd like for my boys to be able to get the free Amazon movies and tv shows but their TVs don't support the Amazon feed. The Roku 2XD is listed as a compatible device. Anyone here have any experience with a Roku box? If so, what do you use it for? I'm trying to figure out if there is $80 worth of functionality in these things.

And as far as voiding the warranty, that's really not an issue. Like any other jailbreak/root process, if anything actually happens to the device that would require warranty work, they'd never be able to tell it had ever been jailbroken unless you're a complete idiot.
It's the principle of the thing. I jailbroke the first iPhone without issue and gain root on a regular basis...just with Metasploit. There's also the issue of this being a "production machine" around the house...meaning the wife uses it.

Me neither but something tells me you don't want to be standing next to him the next time he gains root.

F ads. Or, as Amazon likes to disguise them as, "special offers".

Which part?

Anything my wife uses has to be fully tested so I don't end up having to support it when it acts wonky.

Metasploit: the open source exploitation tool for use against machines that you want to pwn. I thought you worked in tech?

Fish, how have you dealt with the recent Icefilms outage? I was thinking of trying a premium MU account.

Ahh. Well XBMC has a kiosk mode where you can make it idiot proof for wives and kids and such..

It's not really Icefilms, it's Megauplaod. They've been having lots of issues lately. Working great for me now.

You can check the last few pages of this thread for updates on issues with Icefilms. It will always tell you what's up.

interesting. does it encrypt the traffic to avoid throttling from the ISP? Does it require a MU account?

Are you familiar with SickBeard? Also might be something up your alley.

We have a Roku in our basement as a Netflix machine primarily. It works great for that, but I honestly can't speak much for any of the other apps. They do seem to do a good job of releasing new apps when new tech comes around, though.

Jailbreaking with Seasonpass..

That will jailbreak the device. Once that's done, install aTV Flash (black), which will give you the options to install XBMC, along with a bunch of other useful stuff.

Installing aTV Flash (black)....

There are other options available that do not require you to purchase anything or resort to questionable means of acquiring software, but they're much more complicated.
How much do the two apps cost?

Seasonpass is free, but aTV(Black) is $30 if you buy it from them.

That AppleTVHacks website is brutal. I was researching this the other day and got stuck in this endless loop of linkwhoring between similar sites. How about linking to the original content sources once every 10 pages or so?

Seas0nPass Instructions
aTV Instructions

(I can't vouch for these as I have yet to install them. Soon.)

Last edited by DaveNull; 01-04-2012 at 08:46 PM.. Reason: Confirmed the freeness of seasonpass and added detailed instructions
