Interesting. I would think Duke would lean towards the Big10 because of academics. I don't know much about North Carolina's academics though.

That is false. I agree regarding Duke, but FSU is clearly the most valuable school in the conference. Its just a grudge and a quirk of history with the SEC and the B1G's peculiarities keeping them out of those two conferences.

Not a chance. FSU isn't even the premier program in it's home state. There's a reason that the SEC and B1G are competing for UNC while FSU is lobbying (and failing) to get in.

I don't understand this. Everyone says that, but why would there be a political connection between a private, elite school and the flagship public university? NC State, I believe, is actually a branch of North Carolina. If UNC is looking out for anyone, it seems like it would be them.

Those are two tight-knit universities for a lot of reasons, not the least of which are proximity and history. UNC, while perhaps not quite at this level, likens itself as a public Ivy; it's a great academic institution.

This isn't Miss America where first you must win your state before going on to nationals and even if you are the 3rd-best in the country if #1 is also in your state too bad, we compare teams on their own merits.

All things being equal, FSU would obviously get the nod over UNC. All things aren't equal because UF/UGA/SC will block. Hypothetically, if UF did not exist, FSU would have been a member of the SEC years ago.

Agree. Despite what some might think, football is where the money is overall, but Duke and UNC are both anomalies in basketball revenue. They bring in $26 mil and 20 mil respectively, compared to only $19mil for FSU football.

You're crazy. North Carolina is one of the best schools in the country. They have a huge, wealthy alumni base, are the flagship university of a reasonably well populated state, is one of the premier basketball factories, and is largely viewed as a sleeping giant in football.

Florida State is a second tier school in its own state in terms of popularity, is marginal academically, and has a strong football past that was all under a coach who left amid scandals.

They are still a solid get, but they aren't in the same league as North Carolina. That's why UNC drives the conference, and FSU just grumbles about it.
