Our democracy must be built different to these people. Emily needs to go back to cleaning houses and not talk when adults are around.

This is a loser issue for Obama and its gone on long enough he will look like a total fool if he backs down.

(TPM) — In a statement set to go out to reporters today, EMILY’s List praises the White House and Democrats on the progress they’ve made so far on expanding women’s health access — but warns them against backing away from the plan to require all health insurance plans, even those at religious-run institutions like hospitals and universities, to provide contraception coverage.

“Respect for people’s religious beliefs does not mean that your boss gets to decide what kind of health care you get,” EMILY’s List president Stephanie Schriock says in the statement. “Respect for people’s religious beliefs and their individual liberty means individuals get to decide what kind of religion they practice and what health care is right for them.”

“A person may decide not to use a medication, but that’s their decision,” she continues. “Institutions that serve a broader public have an obligation to respect our nation’s core value of individual liberty, as we respect their religious beliefs.”

In the past 24 hours, the White House has appeared to signal an intention to compromise on the contraception plan with religious institutions. The issue has become a firestorm in the presidential race, with Mitt Romney attacking President Obama on the issue, and conservative groups and Catholic leaders joining in.

Schriock tells the White House to stand its ground.

“The core of our democracy is at stake if Romney and the right wing impose a structure where some women have to choose between second class citizenship and diminished access to health care or their job,” she says in the statement.

Uhm, HCf, most conservatives correct this idea of the US being a democracy. We are not. We are a republic. A representative republic. These things are not a democracy, an idea frowned on by our Founders but promoted by the socialist leaning left. You play right into the left's hands when you rely on using the word "democracy." It fits right in this issue as it relies on what the majority wants — not on protecting fundamental rights of a minority.

Then the republic is at stake here. Women should not only have the right to free contraceptives, we really should force it on them. Then the Republic will be preserved!

How are we forcing it on anyone...they can either take the pill or not. I understand the issue about Catholic hospitals and birth control. Really, I get it. What I don't get is people saying that we are "forcing" women to take birth control.

It appears Emilys list people would feel better about the future of the country if it was mandatory. I mean is some is good, a lot would be better

OK, a more accurate statement would be to say that Catholic hospitals, schools and other organizations are being forced to pay for something that is completely against their ethical and religious principles.

It would be nice if this pissed off enough people to make a difference in the election.

I was forced to pay for the Iraq war with my taxes. Hated it. It was against my moral and ethical principles. Still is. But I did it.

You live in a representative republic, sometimes you do things that you just dont' agree with.

That's true, but you have every right to try to end the Iraq war, and have a legitimate claim in trying to end it, and if you can persuade the decision-makers to end it, you win.

I remember there was a debate about a month ago where they asked Mitt Romney about contraception, and I was dumbfounded on how contraception could possibly ever become a national issue. Leave it to leftists to show that up in less than 30 days.
