88 million out of work and not looking for a job

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Number of the day

88 million

That's how many working-age Americans don't have a job and aren't trying to find one. The increase in people dropping out of the labor market altogether skews the otherwise-positive unemployment numbers released last week. While the jobless rate fell to 8.3 percent in January - a three-year low - it doesn't account for this army of nonworking Americans. The percentage of people participating in the labor market dropped to 63.7 percent last month, the lowest level since May 1983.
Hear here

"I don't know whether dictatorship is the right word, but it more or less defies every vestige of shareholder democracy known to man."

Larry Haverty, a portfolio manager at Gamco Investors, on Facebook's corporate-governance structure. CEO Mark Zuckerberg controls 56.9 percent of voting power at Facebook, and he has the right to appoint his own successor - a "disquieting factor," Haverty says. "I don't think it's how business should be run." Corporate-governance experts and the California State Teachers' Retirement System also have raised concerns about the social-networking company's policies.
Heads up

LinkedIn releases fourth-quarter financial results today, and the professional-networking website is expected to post a net loss of about $779,000, less than in the previous quarter. Sales may rise to $159.8 million. This is only the third time the Mountain View company has reported results since going public in May. The stock has been a roller-coaster ride for investors, though it's still way up from its initial public offering price of $45.

This article appeared on page D - 1 of the San Francisco Chronicle

88 million sounds like a stretch.

Our total population is just over 300. Subtract out kids, old/retired and students and I'm guessing we're at workforce around 200 million.

That would put the unemployment at like 44%.

While it's staggering, it is indeed what the article is claiming:

In other words, it might be hard to believe, but that's what it's saying.

This article needs to be reported to obama's Truth Team so the citizen who wrote it can receive the Re-education he needs.

It seems like it depends on how inclusive "working age Americans" is. 16-85, regardless of education status, retirement, stay at home parents, etc.

Working for corporate america sucks, low pay and they keep increasing work load without an increase in pay just so they can get more rich while all of their workers struggle. I do it and I hate it, there is nothing I can do to better my work situation atm, there are 50 applications coming in a week and my bosses mentality which is straight from corporate is if I don't like it, I'll just be fired and get another employee tomorrow. Every corporation has a list of values that they proudly display but never are actually true, they are all the same. We struggle, they get rich, no loyalty in fact I'm pretty sure we are hated as employees even though we bust our ass for 99% of the shift, after working my ass off for 5 straight hours if I get a ****ing glass of water that's considered lowering productivity and have to get a dirty look from my boss. I ****ing hate this shit and this is america today.

Jesus dude. Maybe you need to find another job, or another line of work. I've never had that kind of issue working in "corporate America" and I've never been management either.

I prefer working in a large corp. The benefits rock and it includes a discount stock buying program.

You're 21 years old. Some college? No college? You're completely expendable, and most likely, you don't do a great job, and spend most of your time on facebook or other websites, like chiefsplanet.

bullshit. I have a BSE, I have never been fired or written up in the past 10 years. I do my job very well but it doesn't really matter. Everybody is completely expendable, that's the point and I never break policy, I take what I do very seriously and it still doesn't matter. I never even bring my cell phone into work, I always turn if off and leave it in the car. So **** you, you don't know shit.

Things I've seen people get fired for in my venture in corporate america:

1. 12+ hour shifts are commonplace and if you want a break, expect to get your hours docked on the next schedule, so I saw one girl get fired because she tried to eat a powerbar off in a corner somewhere. Company policy says you cannot eat anything while on the clock fired. But she just wanted sustenance to make it 12 hours.

2. A girl was 20 minutes late for the first time because she got in a car wreck that wasn't her fault. FIRED.

3. Drinking water or going to the bathroom is allowed but frowned upon.

4. Fired if you don't sign the break waiver.

5. Dozens of people fired because they lost their nametag for a second time, first time is a final written warning.

6. Dozens of people fired because a curse word slipped out, not towards anybody however.

7. Dozens of people having a cell phone on their person, turned off but the manager could see the buldge in their pockets so they would ask them to empty their pockets and just having a phone on your person is FIRED.

8. One guys mom called because someone died and he got fired. Personal phone calls are not allowed.

and the list goes on and on and on

shit like this is just treating us as 2nd class citizens, we are not people to corporations we are ****ing worthless slaves.
