Car problem question

Hi there,

Long time listener, first time caller.

I have a 2000 BMW Z3. I took it into the dealer a couple of days ago because a turn signal light was out and apparently they have to order this particular light bulb from some remote village in Bavaria.

So they replace the light bulb, and as I'm getting back into the car I remember this weird intermittent problem with my door handle. Sometimes when you try to open the door it's as if the door handle is locked. The door won't open, though you can hear a slight clunk that you don't hear when it's locked. When it happens, you just try again and it almost always opens the second time.

So they tell me that they'll have to open up the door to check it out and I have to leave the car for a day. They look and can't figure out what's wrong with it, which doesn't overly surprise me since it's intermittent. They tell me they can replace the entire assembly for $650, but I take a pass on that. I'll keep the $650 and have the intermittent door problem.

My wife went to pick the car up, and their practice is to drive the car from the service area to the customer area, and she gets it from there. So she never started the car and just drove straight home.

Now it's the next morning, and the car won't start. It seems like it might be a dead battery. It makes a series of clicks, and while they don't sound like the clicks I've heard in other dead batteries, maybe it's just a BMW thing.

So my questions are:

1. Is it possible that my wife is cheating on me with the BMW service guy?

2. Would you disconnect the electrical power and/or battery to open up the door to check the handle, and would there be anything associated with that (or the light bulb) that could cause a bad connection or an improperly reattached connection? I find it odd that that battery dies immediately after they service it and am wondering if it's not really dead.

3. Should we sign Peyton Manning or trade up for RGIII?

Check the battery connections to see if they're loose.

As an update, the tow truck guy immediately jump-started the car, so it's definitely the battery being dead as opposed to a loose connection. We drove to the local gas station/repair shop to see if they can get the battery (apparently it's not a run of the mill battery) and that guy couldn't even understand what a battery was, so my wife offered to take the car on to the dealership without me since I'm working on a work deadline. And Manning is throwing well in private workouts.

So I've concluded that:

a) my wife is cheating on me with the BMW service guy.

b) the battery is probably 5 or 6 years old and started with the jump, so maybe it's just a dead battery. The timing is odd, though. I bet they were using my headlights at the dealership to do puppet shows or something.

c) Manning would be a good fit.

d) There's a reason I stopped taking my car to the local repair shop, and now I remember why.

Yep and clean them and the posts, if dirty. Baking soda and water work well.

Your dingle arm is missaligned with your marsen veins causing interference with your lunar wayne shaft. Get it taken care of before you blow a rod, cause I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that.

That's exactly what the dealership said when they called. The bummer is that it's going to cost me almost $4,000 and on top of that my wife and the service dealer are going to have to go to Aruba to pick up the part. Apparently there's only one company in the world that makes them, and they require the owner and service dealer to go there together to pick it up. What a pain in the neck.

Just because it would take a jump dont mean the battery is dead. Its probably still the connection. They likely disconeccted the battery in order to reset the system. They probably just didnt get a good enough connection when they hooked it back up. A battery with a bad connection will often times still take a jump for whatever reason.

If you still think its the battery, get it tested. Its freee at many auto parts houses. Once you buy the battery and hook it up, you own it. No refunds.

I had to replace the door handle on my F250 last week. So I pulled up a youtube on how to do this feat. To remove the indoor panel the switches had to be disconnected so they reccommended disconnecting the battery. I didn't disconnect it because I'm always in a hurry but it was recommended.

If the battery is 5 or 6 years old it's on borrowed time if it's not already bad. Replace the friggin' thing.

Battery is dead because the tech left the key on while screwing around with the door locks. It might just need a charge but replace it if you can afford it.

Secondly, the door locks operate on a rod/pulley system and are connected to a motor. Likely the small plastic rod connectors are worn out and have some slop so they don't function correctly 100% of the time.
Either that or the swivel points need to be lubricated with white grease or graphite lube. Sauto would be a good guy to hit up for some pointers on this as well.
