Because having a college degree, or a law school degree, is NOT a prerequisite for holding the office of POTUS, I see no reason for a candidate to have to disclose them if he doesn't want to. Those records are confidential and it's the candidates choice to disclose. If he chooses not to disclose, then the voters can take them into account as they would like when election time comes around.

I also don't know what you mean by "sealed". Those records are confidential, not sealed. Because they are confidential the school can't release them to anybody without the student's permission. There's no special thing that happened to "seal" Obama's records. No court order or anything. It's just routine confidentiality.

I'm actually trying to understand what you're saying by this "sealed" issue.

The word "sealed", to me, is generally when a document that is otherwise publicly available becomes unavailable to the public for some reason, usually via court order.

Out of the entire universe of documents out there, not that many are actually part of the public record. The files in most business offices and homes are confidential and private, but they're not "sealed". My law school transcript is "confidential", in that the law school is not allowed to post it on the web or give to, say, YOU, or the New York Times, just because they ask. But that doesn't make it "sealed".

For a document to become sealed means that someone (a judge, typically), has made something that would OTHERWISE be publicly available, NOT publicly available.

I'm not aware of any document relating to Obama being "sealed". I am aware that he has declined to make public certain confidential/private documents that he, just like you or I, could decline to make public if asked. Now, he's running for POTUS, so there's a bunch of special rules to apply to him. Disclosure of certain income or tax issues, for example, that he must disclose. But there's no "disclose your school transcripts" rule.

So the voters get to factor in that refusal in their vote. Hold it against him, you could say, if they want.

I'm also wondering if he wrote a thesis. He never went for a Ph.D as far as I'm aware, and there's no requirement to write a thesis in undergrad or law school. In fact, it would be very unusual to write a "thesis" in either case.

In law school, typically one writes a case note for law review, if they are on law review.
